So I'm trying to make some creative fleece hats for my friends this Christmas, but I've never added wire before. I need some ears and other things to be able to stand up but I'm not sure how I should wire some of them. I found this nifty tutorial:
It look great but seems like it either might be uncomfortable or at least look kinda shabby with the masking tape...Is there a less sloppy way to go about wiring ears?

Also, I need to wire a single pom pom at the top of one hat: http://eitanya.deviantart.com/art/Moogle-fleece-hat-184044278
(I assume those little wings wouldn't need wire, right?)

Any suggestions are welcome!!

I do commissions if you're interested! Check out my webstore!: http://mongrelterritory.weebly.com/

You could take a look at this tutorial:

The author includes a PDF of the hat pattern you can print out at home.  Step 10 describes how to wire and stuff the ears.
