Crafting to keep insanity at bay.

I just finished this screen printing project for my fiber class at school. Took 7 hours of hard labor to get it done, not to mention the prep time before hand getting the screens ready. It was based on juxapositions - I wanted to do something fun. The total size of the fabric is approximately 2.5 yds.

Here's the first layer, a lightish pink done in a half drop pattern.

The second layer, and part of the third (I almost forgot to take a picture oops)

And final layer of black detail, a closer shot

And an overall  Smiley

I've love to hear any thoughts or comments. Thanks guys!

EDIT: I had a chat with my teacher and she thought some small embellishments would be great, so I came up with the brilliant notion that of course there would be some flamingos that thought they were better than the others. Of course! Here's their beauty shots  Smiley

And another fun arty shot

I don't even like flamingos - but this is awesome.  Are you planning a project with it?

I haven't planned anything specific with it yet, except maybe taking a small chunk out to do a hoopla with.

Thanks guys!  Smiley While I can't really say it was a ton of fun making it (my body is still sore from yesterday standing on my feet all day) I do love the end result.

I took an intro fiber class last winter where I did screen printing for the first time, though that was all low tech contact paper printing. The class I'm in now started in Sept and we've done a bunch more since then. This is my first project using photo emulsion though. It was so scary making the screen because I didn't know what to expect or if it would even turn out, but after doing it I'm not scared anymore and I hope I get the chance to do it again!  Cheesy I think next time I'll be even more adventurous with my design. The light color layer was done with the contact paper technique (after I screwed up my screen 3 times I had enough) and middle colored layer was done with drawing fluid/filler. One the black was the photo emulsion.

i know how frustrating it can be. i studied textile design in uni about 6 years ago and specialised in screen print. but i wasnt able to do anything apart from design until last year when ppl i know opened up a print studio just a bus ride from my house (i was over the moon when i found out!i'm just way too messy to do it at home). since then ive been kinda retraining myself all the old tricks but i love it still! i'd love to get to a point wher i can screen print lengths to sell  Cheesy

have fun with it, the more practise you get the easier it seems. and post stuff when you do  Grin

I wish my school would offer screen printing! And they probably will later on, but I of course, will have graduated. We have 2 profs now who are super skilled, but don't want to teach it because they know they'll turn into a t-shirt shop, which is not what they want so they refuse to let people know they can do it.  Undecided But seriously, I love the flamingos!!!

I'm still up in the air about what I want to make from it. I will have updated pictures later today because as a last minute decision I embroidered a couple of tiaras on a few a of the birds  Cheesy Very very subtle as its hard to make out from far away but close up its hilarious and great.

seabound - The teachers at my school are pretty open-minded. We definitely don't have any tshirt assignments, but they let the students use the labs during non-class hours for whatever they want, so in theory I could print shirts if I wanted to, but I'd have to be sure to be on top of my school assignments too. I imagine if that sort of privilege got out of hand (like too much waste of the materials) it would be severely limited.
