I made a little house elf for my partner imera in the one tiny thing swap:

It was inspired by Angry Angel's Dobby Doll. I really wanted one, but I wanted a smaller one, to fit Harry Potter themed amigurumi that I usually make.

Size reference: Lucius in this picture is about 5 inches tall.

Some technical information:
I used cotton yarn, fibre fill and a 2mm hook, the eyes were 5mm. Unfortunately, I couldn't get green eyes that small (Dobby is said to have green eyes in the books), so I used brown ones.
The clothing is just a bit of paper towel. I only wanted to use it as a template for a cloth piece, but it had the ragged look and fit well so I left it on.
Edit: I feel so cruel not to have given him clothing... but he was supposed to be with Lucius. But if you make a Dobby, perhaps you could give him a sock?  Wink

House Elf Amigurumi Pattern:

For private use.
This pattern is easy, but requires you to know how to make increases and decreases when working in rounds.

Head:
1) ch 2, 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook (or 4sc in a magic ring)
2) 4 sc
3) 6 sc
4) 6 sc
5) 12 sc
6) 18 sc
7-11) 18 sc, insert safety eyes
11 to end) decrease each round by 6 sc, stuff head firmly, close.
The face gets a sorrowful shape if you use safety eyes that allow you to thread some cotton through and pull it very tightly to the back of the skull so the eyes sink into the face a bit. If you use safety eyes that have washers to keep them in place, you can do the shaping by pulling back the eye sockets with a thread. The back of the head will flatten a bit if you do this, but it's not too bad.
Edit: In the meantime, I pull the thread that sinks the eyes in through the throat area, so no more flattening of head.

Ears: (make two, work in rows, not rounds):
1) ch 2, 2 sc
2) 4 sc
3) 6 sc
4) 8 sc
leave a long tail for sewing the ears on later

Legs and Body:
1) ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd sc from hook (or 6 sc in a magic ring)
2-6) rounds of 6sc, cut thread, leave long tail
7) make another leg the same way, but don't cut off yarn on the second one. continue with a round of 12 sc over both legs. Neaten crotch by sewing shut with leftover tail from first leg
8-13) 12 sc
14) decrease to 6 sc, cut off yarn, leave long tail.
Stuff body

Arms:
1) ch4, 4sc in 2nd ch or 4sc in magic ring
2-6) rounds of 4 sc
leave long tail

Finish:
Sew on ears in a curve.
Pin all parts in place, check posture (for example, if you want the slightly sidewise turned head), sew on head and arms.
Dress in rags.

Please post a picture if you make one!

He is too cute for words and thanks for the pattern. Would 6mm or 9mm eyes be small enough, do you think.

I looked - the eyes I have here are 5mm, those must be the same that I used on the house elf. I'll add that info on the pattern.
Germany is a safety eye desert, you don't even get them on ebay. I have a craft store that sells some, but I guess I'll end up importing some from the US (thanks for the link, NyteFyre!), because I want clear ones that I can paint myself.
9mm eyes would probably be looking good on the 5 inch amigurumis (which are more or less the same pattern with twice as many stitches per row).

So many comments in such a short time, wow.
Aw, SpookyPooky likes something I made *blush*
And patty_o_furniture thinks this rocks *recycle same blush while I'm at it*

I've been meaning to post for months now to say thank you so much for putting up your pattern.  You absolutely saved my life (well, my brain and the hopes and dreams of a seven-year-old) at Christmas when I told my little cousin I would make her any Harry Potter character she wanted, and she chose Dobby.

I've posted pictures to DeviantArt and linked to here for the pattern. I hope that's all right!  Smiley

Once again, thanks so much!

Aw, cute! And he has his sock!
That's a great solution for the green eye color! Did you embroider around the pupil or crochet a circle?

Hi,
Thanks for the pattern!
Here's my mini house elf.  I modified the pattern a bit to give him a shorter nose, a fatter belly (I hope you don't mind). I also crocheted him a little sack to wear, and a sock to hold (he's just been given his freedom, lol).

The size was perfect, as I was looking for something that would fit with my other Harry Potter amis.
Thanks again!

Don't mind the modifications at all! I especially like the longer and thinner arms and legs! Thanks for posting a pic! And aw, he has a sock Wink
