I noticed some on PETA.org's store. Anybody tried them? Are they worth my money?

And- is there such thing as gelatin without animal by-products? If so, where can I get them? (I live in Canada)

Spanx:)

it wouldn't be called gelatin, i'm afraid.

the closest you can get is maybe Agar-Agar or some other types of plant derived cellulose.

http://www.foodsubs.com/ThickenGelatins.html

also, please be careful! Kosher Gelatin can be made of fish bones.  If you're vegan, that's a no-no!  If you eat fish, maybe that's okay for you.

Always read the ingredients.

haven't tried the marshmellows.  I'm dying to make the small ones that go in cereal because i miss my lucky charms... hahahahahaha

Yes, they are worth it and delicious. They don't have gelatin they have agar or carageenan. Rice krispie treats! Yum!!

Agar and caregeenan are not fish gelatin, they are both derived from seaweed and are 100% vegan. It is a plant based thing, like spirulina. Other types are arrowroot and kudzu.

there is one marshmallow brand that uses "imes product and has been found to contain animal proteins.  there are some out there though that still are surely animal by product free.  i think pangae or pangea.com sells them.  there also at stores like wild oats and you can still make rice krispies with marshmallow fluff i believe

it works fine for rice krispies though (the fluff)...tastes about the same to me and then you can probably just use vegan magarine to replace the butter

I'm shocked that marshmallow fluff is vegan. I won't touch that stuff and I'm not vegan anymore, just a health junkie.

SOME kosher gelatins are fish derived. I don't know what it's like in the states, but here (Australia) it's specified if it's fish based (common allergen and all that). So not ALL are all fishie! Some are veggo!

Uhmmmmm....is this considered unusual behavior for 11 year old boys? I can barely restrain my husband from doing stuff like this.... Roll Eyes

I'm shocked that marshmallow fluff is vegan. I won't touch that stuff and I'm not vegan anymore, just a health junkie.

so is the ultra ultra low fat dream whip. the ultimate cheap vegan desert is bananas, dream whip and chocolate sauce. it tastes pretty good, as long as you don't think about the fact that you're eating an "edible oil product"

gross huh?

also, for the vegan marshmellow thing, ikea sells these really awesome chocolate covered marshmellow puffs with a coconut base that are vegan. they're so good!

Thanks ladywyntir! I'll try that recipe sometime this SUMMER(yes-school is out! finally!)!

I'm not vegan, since I do eat some dairy products (lately I've been hooked on soy milk though), so I thought I'd try meringue as a marshmallow replacement for smores. It was kind of disgusting. Too sweet, seeing as its  cream of tartar LOTS of sugar and egg whites.
Another question: Ive heard that some sugar has charred animal bones add to whiten it. Does anyone know of any specific brands of sugar that contain animal bones? Thanks

P.S: I dont think my brothers behaviour is "normal" for him. He usually not THAT wild. But when he gets hyper, man is it crazy. I think he gets it from my Dad (who acts like he's 12- pretty cool eh?).

Just an FYI... if you are vegan, you  might want to find a brand other than emes...like if you are a really strict vegan for the marshmallow recipe on the site.  I myself would maybe use it, but they did find animal protein i believe upon testing some emes kosher products.

Here are some links I found that relate to vegan marshmallows (from notmartha.org):

http://www.fatfree.com/recipes/condiments/marshmallows
http://www.tinytrapeze.com/productview3.cfm?categoryID=5
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=vegan+marshmallow&btnG=Google+Search

The Tiny Trapeze ones look especially yummy, but I haven't had a chance to try them yet...

maraschinomuffin: some manufacturers use these things called bone-charcaol filters to whiten the sugar, but they're not used with beet sugar (only cane/ granulated sugar, and not all brands at that) it talks about that here:
