This year Hubby, our daughter and myself went as 2 of the Wild things, and Max. I spent about $7 on my daughters costume, buying clearance and discounted fabrics. It was my first time sewing a full costume, I was very happy with how it turned out!

 
The masks were made using paper mache, carboard and foam balls. They were heavily inspired by Amy's Carol Mask, found here:

Oh WOW - Love these - you did an incredible job - just brilliant.  I want to make me a hooded with ears costume, with the tail - I love all of it. Cheesy    I hit THIS ROCKS.  You do!!
