I have always loved the slightly tacky costume that Captain Janeway wears in the "Bride of Chaotica" episode of Star Trek: Voyager. It was a bit of a spoof of 1950s bad sci-fi serials. You can see a clip here: http://youtu.be/EUPJLLuKFNg

So, taking that as my inspiration, I decided to create a related, semi-tacky outfit: Queen of the SpiderPeople. I used Simplicity See & Sew 3878 for the base of the dress and had a ton of fun accessorizing with bad spider accessories. I decided, while I was working on it, that this poor woman used to live in a little home in suburbia where all the furniture was covered with plastic. When she suddenly became a super-villain, she did her best, but really didn't get it.

The guy in the third picture is my husband, with both of us mugging for the camera. The caption should be "Get out of my way, woman! It's my photo shoot!"

When I saw the title of the post I was hoping that it was a reference.
