greetings fellow craftsters! this year my husband and i decided to dress as characters from the Adult Swim cartoon Venture Brothers. for those not familiar look here :

we realized just how much my husband looks like dr. rusty venture so that was a no brainer (in the interest of brevity, i will post about him separately in the regular costume area) i decided to be dr. henry killinger, a kind of supervillian cross between mary poppins and henry kissinger. when i first set my eyes on Dr. Killinger's shoes, i *knew* i had to make them.... i mean, who doesn't want skull slippers?
for those interested i can certainly copy the tutorial i wrote on my blog these puppies, but i thought i'd try to keep this particular post to a reasonable length. good ol' dr. k has *a lot* of props!
an evil mary poppins wouldn't be complete without an umbrella. this is what i found.... pretty ok except it needed to be painted
used fabric paint to outline the contour lines to heighten the cartoonish look (you will see this theme throughout the costume)
i painted and varnished (thank you hard coat mod podge!) the handle and shaft
outlining the edge gave it a really cool effect when rolled up
leggings and gloves contoured/highlighted in red again
i found this fantastic vintage bag on etsy that i knew i could transform into my murder bag
i blacked out the stitching, added the killinger logo and the silver lines around the opening (a nod to the metal clasps on a real vintage doctor bag)
add the handcuffs (partially painted to match the bag and other 'silver' accessories)
i started with this stethoscope and painted the black tubing
here it is in action and painted
next up, the coat... i decided to modify this pattern a little
i used silvery grey bias tape to highlight the contours since the coat is black, but drawn in grey (this shows up well on the back, but i didn't think we needed another photo here... there are so many as it is!)
the buttons are the cover your own kind that i didn't cover- i just glued together and painted to match the silver accessories
the mask i made out of crayola model magic. very lightweight! i covered an old cast of my face with foil and sculpted it on
as you can see there were several cracks and such.... several layers of paint and glue and varnish later...
i also added some sheer yellow fabric on the eyes for that extra creepy effect.
