I've seen these all over the web lately...and it just so happened on of my friends just shaved off his mountain man beard. He wasd complaining of his face feeling a bit chilly in the Montana fall so I decided I should probably make one for him. He's out of town for the moment, but as so as he gets back I'll post an "action" picture!
Tutuorial/Pattern (Okay so this is my first attempt at tute...
, so just let me know if you have any questions), okay, here we go....
Side Note ** I used a J hook w/ Lion's Brand Simply Soft. If you use different yarn or hooks it will change the size, but this is just a basic beanie and this is just my variation. I like to wear my beanies a bit looser and longer than some. So feel free to use your own pattern or any other one you'd like. It just starts off with a regular, run of the mill beanie so feel free to use whatever your little heart desires
1st off...Basic Beanie:
Foundation: Chain 4 and attach with slip stitch (ss)
1st Round(rnd): Chain 2, 9 halfdouble(hdc) chains in foundation ring (total: 10 stitches) join last hdc with ss to 2nd stitch in begining chain 2.
2nd rnd: Chain 2, 1 hdc in same stitch, 2 hdc in 2nd stitch and continue throughout. join with ss in 2nd chain of ch2 (20)
3rd rnd: chain 2, 1hdc in same stitch, 1hdc in next stitch *2 hdc in next stitch, 1hdc in next stitch* repeat * to * 8 times, join (30)
4th rnd: chain 2, 1hdc in same stitch, 1hcd in next 2 stitches, * 2hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 2 stitiches* repeat * to* repeat 8 times, join (40)
5th rnd: chain 2, 1hdc in same stitch, 1hdc in next 3 stitches, *2hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches* repeat 8 times, join (50)
6th rnd: chain 2, 1hdc in same stitch, 1hdc in next 4 stitches, *2hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 4 stitches*, repeat * to* 8 times, join (60)
7th rnd: chain 2, 1 hdc in next stitch, cont 1 hdc in each stitch to end, join (60)
Round 8 through 30: repeat round 7, join, weave in ends.
Side note ** I just wrote this pattern without any color variations, but my original post has stripes. So feel free to jazz it up a bit with stripes or different stitches if you wish.
Step 2: The Instant (sort of) Epic Beard
Side note** you'll need to know a puff stitch, which is yarn over hook, draw up loop through stitch, repeat twice, total of 7 loops on hook, yarn over, draw through all 7 loops.
Chain 35
Row 1: 1 single chain (sc) in 2nd chain fromt the hook, 1 hdc in next stitch, 1 puff stitch in next stitch, repeat through next 29 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch, 1 sc in next stitch, chain 1. Turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in 2nd chain from hoook, 1 hdc in next stitch, puff stitch in next 11 stitches, chain 7, skip next 7 stitches (now this is the mouth hole, so it may vary from person to person, so just measure so that it fits), 1 puff stitch in next 12 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch, 1sc in next stitch, chain one. Turn.
Row 3: 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook, 1 hdc in next hook, puff stitch in next 30 stitches, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in next stitch, chain one. Turn.
Row 4: Repeat row 3.
Row 5: 1 sc 2nd chain from hook, 1 hdc in next chain, puff stitch in next 10 stitches, decrease over next 2 stitches (how I decrease with a puff is; YO pull up loop through first stitch, YO, pull up loop through next stitch, YO, pull up loop through same stitch, YO, pull through all 7 loops on stitch; decrease made), puff stitch in next 6 stitches, decrease over next 2 stitches. puff stitch in next 10 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch, 1 sc in next stitch, chain 1. Turn.
Row 6: 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook, 1 hdc in next stitch, puff stitch in next 9 stitches, decrease over next 2 stitches, puff stitch in next 5 stitches, decrease over next 2 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch, 1 sc in next stitch, chain 1. Turn.
Row 7: 1 hdc in 2nd chain from hook and 1 hdc in each stitch to end. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Step 3: Attaching epic beard.
So this is what I did, but you can change it to fit as you'd like. I put the hat on and placed the beard over my face so that it sat where I liked it. I put a safety pin to mark where I wanted the top of the beard to fit to the hat. After I had the safety pins on to mark the hat, I took the hat off and flipped it inside out. I attached the beard with a whipstitch to the wrong side of the hat. So that when it's on the top of the beard is on the inside of the hat, so that the hat comes over the sides.
Step 4: Enjoy your instant mountain man hat. Or as my friend said when he put in on "I think I'm going to go as Zach Galifianakis for Halloween"
