I made a bag!

Based off this:

Made out of this:

Turned out like this:

It was my first time using leather like this but I love how it turned out.  Sure it's got a few mistakes here and there, but nothing too glaring I think.  I'm just excited that I can say that my very first genuine leather purse is upcycled and that I made it with my own two hands.  And a very reluctant sewing machine.

For more photos and more lengthy explanations please check out my site: http://www.chezlin.com/ucycled-leather-jacket-purse/ Thanks!

that turned out great!  i love the color of the inside.  is that the lining of the jacket, or a different lining?

Thanks!  The lining was just some fabric I picked up at the fabric store.  The original lining was a dark brown but I wanted to have a nice pop of color when you opened the bag Smiley

Thanks all Cheesy

I have enough left over leather from the jacket to make another purse I think... and I've also acquired another leather jacket.  I'm addicted!

Thanks all! Smiley

Thanks!  Some stuff I figured out was that bobby pins are great to use to hold the leather pieces together prior to sewing them up.  You're not supposed to use regular pins because they'll leave holes in the leather.  Also, go slow.  I broke many a needle because I was getting impatient about the bag getting completed.  I also found that the leather I had didn't want to easily move through the sewing machine.  It was getting kind of stuck to the presser foot, so some of the stitching is all out of wack.  Towards the end of the purse I had the brilliant idea of covering the bottom side of the presser foot with a little but of painters tape and it actually helped with the leather sticking.  Hope these tips help!

I'm glad you guys all like it!  I'm working on another purse with the left over bits of jacket as I type! Smiley

Oh no, you didn't sew this with a regular sewing machine foot?! D'oh. There is a special foot for that made of teflon (it's white plastic), it allows leather and plastic (aka sticky fabrics) to slide under the foot without issue.

Now I am doubly impressed though, that you did such a wonderful job even without the proper tools. Very nice, impressively completed and thoroughly enviable. I'm tempted to give it a go myself, I think it turned out great.

Haha, yeah... I'm pretty self taught so I'm uneducated about different presser feet and what they do.  Also, I just looked through the feet that came with machine and I don't think I have anything like you've described.  I should probably go pick one of those suckers up!  Thanks for letting me know, so future purses will look even better!

This one looks perfect, it's just the process that probably sucked more than it could have Wink.
Machines don't usually come with that foot, it's true, but it's worth picking one up if you're going to work with leather or plastic. I just spent over a hundred bucks on special feet that do all sorts of nifty stuff. They save time and allow for so much creativity, I can't wait to try them all out!
