Simple Statement Wreath
«
on:
October 15, 2011 06:05:57 PM »
While catching up on some blog reading a couple of weeks ago, I came across
this
crocheted wreath. I had the yarn and the hook, and I found the wreath form at Jo-Ann's. It was super easy and super quick- it took me just under an hour to make it (and I don't crochet quickly). It's made with a bulky yarn and a 10" wreath.
The purple yarn totally doesn't go with any room in my house, so I'm thinking a few plastic spiders attached to it would turn it into a fabulous Halloween wreath for the front porch

Ooh, thanks for sharing! I have visions of one of these in jute. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the spiders.

I like the idea of using jute to make one! It's a bit rough on the fingers, and it'd have to be thicker than standard twine, but it would make a great rustic, fall wreath!
Once I get all of the laundry washed & folded (put away is a whole other matter), I'm heading out to see what the store has for fake spiders.

I finally got around to finishing my version of this wreath. I didn't get it done in time for fall this year, but at least I'll have it for next fall.
I think the inside of the wreath is about 8" across. I used Red Heart Super Saver orange and Marrakesh (#0947). The pine cones were picked up while I was walking my dog one night. The feathers were decorative picks from Michael's (where the wreath form came from), and the little bow and green leaves were leftover from my stash. In the picture (from my cell phone because my camera battery was charging), it looks like the feathers are black. They aren't. They are actually deep purple.

Oooh! Very autumnal! What did you use for a wreath form? I was thinking of using a few layers of cardboard for my next one, so I'm hoping that you tried it!
I bought the spiders for mine, but then we got a snowstorm that night and I was without power for 5 days. So, no glue gun, and Halloween pretty much got skipped. But, I have everything handy for next year, too!
We're not behind, we're just very far ahead...

I got the form at Michael's. I think it's some kind MDF-type board and it's actually flat instead of rounded like your wreath. I purposely bought a cheap form (I think it was $2.99 or so) because I've never crocheted around anything and if it didn't work out, then I didn't want to be out much for this project.
Plus, the flat form made it easier to attach my stuff to. And I just used a glue gun for all of that stuff.

I did have to hunt for the rounded foam form, but it wasn't as expensive as I thought when I did find it (plus I had a coupon). I'll have to look for the flat wreath form for another wreath project I have in mind.
And, I think I have a plan for my wreath to make it usable for 2 seasons (Halloween and Spring). For the Halloween wreath, instead of gluing the spiders directly on to the wreath, I think I'll glue them to pins or thumb tacks so I can remove them. Then, for the Spring version, I'll crochet some flowers and pin them on. Fortunately, I have all winter to make them!
