Oops, it is a common word in Dutch, but not that common in English, I pressume.
It is a thick soft cotton fabric that is rough on both sides.
People used to cover their matrasses with a molton sheet before putting on the normal sheet (mainly for absorbing sweat, but also for extra warmth and comfort).

This a perfect craft to do with my young granddaughter. I love the simple lines and the colors you've chosen. Can't wait to try this.
