Oops, it is a common word in Dutch, but not that common in English, I pressume.
It is a thick soft cotton fabric that is rough on both sides.
People used to cover their matrasses with a molton sheet before putting on the normal sheet (mainly for absorbing sweat, but also for extra warmth and comfort).
