My boyfriend wants to dress up as an angel and a knight a'la Romeo and Juliet. As far as DIYs go the dress and the chainmail will be easy but I'm totally stumped on how to make the shoulder armor and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for me.

Go here:

http://www.arador.com/construction/index.html

Click on "Basic Armouring- A Practical Introduction to Armour Making by Paul Blackwell"

Then click on "Basic Armouring, complete volume" then read pages 61 to 64.

Even if you don't have the tools to make it out of metal, you can use the patterns to create cardboard armor and paint it (I've made armor from both cardboard and metal with reasonable results).

Hope it helps!

Oh, and I forgot to add: If you have to go the cardboard route, brads make an excellent substitute for rivets!

There's also a craft foam armor tutorial here:
