I saw a pattern for this in the wonderfully titled a gentle art of knitting by Jane Brocket.  Was quite easy to do, knitted on straights & then sewn up. 



Ps) taking a picture of yourself wearing a hat is very difficult!  Blurry came out best  Cheesy

I think I knitted one like this from a free pattern I found on the interwebs years ago.  I gifted it, and it was well appreciated!  I think I even used a similar yarn - purply heather color.

Great minds think alike!

I like the simplicity of the pattern (8 rows knit, 2 purl).  Although I think it might be a little big (it fits - but not so good for a windy day).  I used wool, so am thinking about giving it a warm wash to try to felt it a little.  Though I need to be brave & careful that I don't shrink it too much!
