My lovely husband is kind of a Zelda nut, so for his 24th birthday I crocheted him this magnificent bastard for his man-cave...it took me about a month, and that's with my little fingers working at warp speed at every waking moment. I actually have a callus on my palm from my crochet needle! I'm so proud of it, it's like I suffered for my art. Smiley It consists of 162 worsted weight crochet squares, 4" each. This whole project was inspired by the fabulous Mario Racoon Rug by enemyairship.

He traversed the imaginary forests in our home, only to come across a mysterious chest. He opened it...

...to claim his prize! He literally made the "DOO DOO DOO DOOOOOO!" sound when he saw it! That was more satisfying than anything else Smiley

LOL I know that sound!  Link is really cute, and I also like that in the one picture your man is posed like Link when he finds something (holds it over his head).  Well done!  And now I have a Christmas gift idea for DH; I can't even begin to count the number of hours we've played Zelda.  Thanks!

ETA:  which method did you use to join the squares?

This is fantastic! I never played Zelda, but I can appreciate how much work went into this after having made a tetris lapghan for a friend's engagement. If you don't mind, would you share the pattern for your squares? They look so pretty! Smiley

Oh I understand your plight all too well! While I have been taking time off here and there I've been working on a blanket with the same pattern for months! Thankfully the portion with link doesn't feel so long because you get to watch it develop. I'm making this for my boyfriend...and now I need to get a treasure chest!! Where did you find yours?

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I really appreciate it! Smiley
Eamea, I just got a yarn needle and whipstitched them together. It took a while, but not as long as making the squares!
Tshanafelt, as soon as I find the pattern I'll post it up, promise.
raeraethejetplane, I found my treasure chest at Hobby Lobby. Be careful though, because my treasure chest was JUST big enough for the rug; that bad boy turned out to be a lot bigger than I anticipated!

I did a web search on line for treasure chests and they all look to small. If I have the time I am going to make it out of two cardboard boxes.

This is fabulous! Cheesy
I'm a huge Zelda nerd, so I have to ask, where did you get such an awesome husband?! Tongue
Also, what pattern did you use for the squares?

This is so well done.  Kudos for tackling a giant Link!  I have ideas for an 8 bit Bowser in the works!

This is probably the closest pattern to what I did, although I used a smaller hook than she did. She also has a youtube link if you want visuals! Smiley

I applaud your dedication, I'm also jealous of your husband because that is awesome! I would totally attempt something like that but I don't think I'd ever finish. Plus if I did my boyfriend would definitely steal it from me

That is so awesome, for some reason I can do just about anything involving crochet but I can't figure out the best way to get squares together...perhaps someday I will have to make something similar!
