After recently watching the Lemony Snicket Movie and being amazed by Violette's coat...

http://www.costumersguide.com/violet/a6.jpg

a wonderful blue/gray affair...

and seeing a pattern such as the one below...

http://www.fitzpatterns.com/Pages/MIMI/0505_Mimi_PatternPage.htm

and thinking... perhaps, if I made the sleeves long and slightly billow-y and extended the length of the dress and changed the front a bit...

have decided, whenever the pattern shows up, that I'd love to make a Violette-esque fall/spring coat.

anyone interested in... sewing along?

I think the blue/gray coat would be great for fall/spring in a wooly material...

I don't think the pattern would work, so I think I'll just try to draft it out myself.

Is there a more experienced sewer who'd be willing to mentor this project?

Not insulting anybodies sewing skills or anything, but in my experience, it's nice to have someone who will answer your questions...

Anyone got any really good pics for this coat, or links to some? I REALLY want to do this coat pattern (or a version of it, gotta be a bit careful re copyright!) for my new pattern business, so I need to see the darn thing properly!

I read this thread last week... People started off talking about Violet's dress and then got to talking about her coat. I think some craftsters have already made versions of the dress, and are working out the coat.

I love it too... But there's no way I could attempt to make it just yet - I'm still only up to bags and cushion covers! Smiley

I might be willing to do this for my 6yo daughter for fall 2005, and I am trying to be humble but at the same time volunteer to mentor because I have been sewing professionally for weddings/grads for the last few years and consider myself at least skilled enough for this.....maybe rate myself advanced, but not quite expert.........

Anyways, my email is dnmgiordano@hotmail.com if anyone has questions, or PM me, or post here and I will check back every-so-often.

That would be great! I fall in your shadow, oh lovely sewer!!

I didn't realize how entirely bad I was until my bobbin ran out of thread and I had to call my mom because I didn't know how to load the bobbin with thread.

Once I get the pattern drafted, which I'm working on, I swear, it's just taking a really long long time, I'll post it. And then get started.

no need for flattery lol.  why not start with a basic coat pattern and adjust it?

for example, get one with the collar you need, then use the biggest size sleeve cap for the puff sleeve then taper it down to the right size and length?
Lenghten the coat and add some godets to get the flared look, I think its godets in her jacket but will take another look.

don't let the front edges of the coat overlap, use a facing for them and add the button details after.

don't forget to line it, I will post a site about bagging your linning later if anyone wants it.
and remember......press every step of the way for a professional result.

And again, any questions PM me or email me.

HTH

Michelle Giordano

P.S.  I will start working on my daughters coat soon and post pics of my progress.

*hides* I've been working on it. But I'm way to hardcore to adapt a pattern, so I'm completely winging it.

Okay, that was a lie. I have a pattern for a long chinese style dress and one of these kind of hippie-ish tops that I'm modifying into the jacket. In my design sketch, I made some changes, but haven't really worked on it the past couple of weeks. meh. summer reading.

Ok, heres a pic. when i finally find my sketch book, I'll post the pic I drew, but I changed it around a bit. I don't really like the fastners, but don't know what to do with them. I added detachable lace on the bottom of my design and a large bow that can be off on the back (one that ties, to make the jacket more fitted). My version of the jacket is fitted with godets that cause the jacket to flare quite a bit more than it does in the movie. I kind of like a mandarin inspired collar, so I think that might be changed. So really, it's not a lot like her coat, but her coat is the inspiration.

Edit:: I know that the jacket is already fitted, but I intend for my version to be a bit looser...

I did amazing things today. I sat down with a New Look Pattern for all sorts of chinese inspired tops, cut them out, transferred them to brown paper, changed that, made 'em longer, cut out a long front pieces with button shanks, a back piece, a back longer piece, a collar, sleeves (from brown paper, again) and then sat back and said

"aha! I have made my pattern for my violette-ish/frock-ish coat!!"

all in the 10 tracks and 52 minutes of Misery Loves Company's "Your vision was never mine to share.

Grin Yeah! Yay! I'm am the shiz-nit!!

I'm learning to sew now, so I think this is probably a bit too complicated for me, but I am totally going to be watching this thread.

I love all of Violet's clothes in that movie, they are so pretty. (as is she)

I haven't heard anything about a pattern coming out from any major companies, but if anyone needs help altering a pattern or drafting their own I would be glad to help.

If anyone knows of a similar pattern please post!

Uhh no, thats the point- this isnt a pattern by a major company. This girl makes free patterns, and patterns to buy on her website. it says Coming Soon! -because its not posted yet.  SO im waiting on her to post this pattern that she drafted herself.

Oh thats right.......sorry.....

leave it to me to not know what I am talking about!  I like fitzpatterns website, I want to buy some of her stuff but my printer is broken......do you know if you save the patterns to your harddrive?  I could print them out somewhere else maybe......

I totally think she should sell more of her patterns and just have one or two free, she is too generous (craftster style I guess lol)

Thanks for pointing that out!

Oh absolutley- What an innovater- i love her website and her style. I cant print those large sizes at home either- so to get the file, just right click on the pattern link and put "save target as"- and save to your desktop or where ever. Im going to make calls this weekend to see who can print up these beauties for me. Im excited!

Leave it to the crafty ones to make the awesome stuff Wink

hi everyone
in the thread about making violet's dress (the link was posted earlier in this thread)
there is a link to a costumer's website who is working on the dress

http://www.costumersguide.com/violet.shtml
and she has a link to another costumer's site who made the coat

http://www.eastofthewoods.com/medievalcourt/c-violet.html

the girl who made the coat modified
Butterick 3836
to make her coat

Smiley

this has made me want to be violet for halloween. . .maybe for all of halloween week
maybe for christmas too! and. . .arbor day!  . . .um. . .yeah.  happy arbor day!

That is HOT! I didn't see it on hotpatterns before (so much to see!).  I am still planning on making one for my kid, that jacket would not suit me and I wouldn't have anywhere to wear it, and a small version is faster!

I suppose one day I will get it done... but I am still around for people who need help, just message me!

this is all very funny that you are doing this because a couple of months ago i was very obsesed with her coat as well. You see, i even made a simplified version out of blue-jean for an american girl doll.
If you would like, i have a little bit of info on my website:

thanks you and have bunches of fun,
