Well, I always wanted to buy one of those cool cat scratching trees for my cats, but they were too expensive. My dad said he could make one himself.. so that's what we did! Initially I had planned to help out a lot, but it ended up being me designing it and getting the materials with my mom and him making it (though I did sit with him when he did Smiley). It was very inexpensive and totally worth it!

The materials were lumber, carpet, a cardboard tube (usually used for cement pouring), stapler gun, nails, sisal rope, and lots of hot glue. We've had it for quite a long time now and we've replaced some of the carpet on one of the bottom legs because the cats scratched it so much, but otherwise no problems. If I did it again though, I wouldn't put on any sisal rope because my cats don't scratch it, it's rather expensive, and it's hard to keep tightly rolled on. The cats, Rudy and Riley, love it and are always playing/sleeping on it. Anyways, here are the pics:

By the looks of this pic we should probably replace it again

You can see how much they love it! Cheesy Enjoy!

That rocks so hard!!  I love those cat trees, but unless I hit a sale, I can never afford them.

What a great idea!

Did you just use carpet remnants or ??

I've never bought carpet so I don't know how the whole deal works, lol

My little cousin actually wanted to play on it too, but it's just not that stable. Cheesy I didn't even realize that contraption could be misread like that! You must have been really suprised when you first read it. hehe. Contraption is what my dad calls it and it seems fitting to me, since it is a combination of contrivance and invention (as it is according to webster's)

Well, initially my mom and I went to buy remnants from a carpet store but they were charging a lot of money. At the store they said they usually throw away most of the stuff on the site of the job and take the larger pieces back to sell. So, instead we kept a lookout and not long after we drove by a house with a carpeting truck in front. My mom asked if we could have the extra and we picked  up a bunch for free later that day. I suppose you could check the stores in your area to see what their policy about remnants is, but I'd avoid paying for it at all costs.

I started laughing when opening this 'cause I glanced fast and thought it said "cat contraception." Ha. Okay just thought I'd share my ignorance.
