I have heard you can put the cd in a bowl with water and get the same result with \out the sparks, anyone tried that. I do, do polymer clay in the microwave in a bowl of water and it seems to work out fine. The beads get nice and hard and no fumes.

Could the crackling process be done in the oven as an alternative? I'm not to comfortable heating CDs in the microwave.

Great idea and the result looks beautiful. But are you sure microwaving metal is safe? Cos the "firework show" you mentioned is actually plasma, which is pretty hot :S
