I purchased several of the cabinets for a different project...I did take a couple apart by microwaving them with no issues...

but...now I have to go back and find that castle...wouldn't that be fun to do a Game of Thrones themed castle?

Didn't you use the bottom of one of those cabinets in your house, MissingWillow?  Full of fabulous goodies, as I recall...let me go back and look...I loved it!

My Michaels has one of the Fantasy houses, a ton of the Gothic houses, but none of the simpler ones.  I'm going to keep checking back to see if they ever get the simpler ones in though. And now I'm also going to have to see if my Michaels has one of those castles. They are so perfect for making something for little boys.

I have seen people mention sandpaper for shingles. Does anyone have a tutorial on this or can you give me an idea of what to do?

What I did was buy a crappy pair of scissors just for this project, then I painted a whole sheet of sandpaper black, cut it into strips about 1.5" wide, then did vertical cuts down the length of the strip about an inch high, so that the strip was still one piece instead of individual shingles.  Then, starting from the bottom of the roof, glue down the strips but stagger the cut marks from one strip to the next.  Does that make sense?

Yes, thank you very much. It was also called to my attention that someone else explained it a few pages back and I missed it. Thank you both for your replies. I am wanting to do my house like an old farmhouse kind of. I would LOVE to paint the roof like old tin but unless I can figure out how to do that, I will do shingles and maybe make them look weathered. I'm so excited to get started on my house Smiley Everyone here is so talented, and I'm inspired!

I decided to go with a different template for the house (http://www.letsbuildadollhouse.com/page012AmericanStyleDollhouse.htm).  It won't be so wee anymore but my daughter saw it and loved it.  The foam board wasn't big enough for the larger pieces but it's probably for the best.  Considering the size of the house, I'd like for it to be very sturdy.

We had some plywood scraps around the house and my boyfriend helped cut everything out.  We have the holes for the door, windows, and staircase left to do this weekend.  Hopefully I'll get to sanding the edges and painting sandpaper that will be used for the shingles this afternoon.

That looks like it will be a pretty cool house. I want to do something similar for my daughter, she really really wants a doll house.

Another progress report from me...

I stayed home sick one day this week, and got a lot done on it that day.

Here is the front door (just sitting there).

Here is an inside shot including the shiny first floor, the inside of the front door, and one of the potential residents that has been exploring the new house.

The bay window.  Inside and out.

This weekend has been mostly wallpapering.

More critters "inspecting" their new home...

Finally, we are gluing the window frames on!!

Those red-tipped metal things were clamps that I bought at a dollar store a while ago.  They are very useful for this type of project.
