(Edited 8/30/2011): Oh. Em. Gee. This project got profiled on Offbeat Home! XD I am sooooo flattered!
http://offbeathome.com/2011/08/repurposed-craft-basket

So, I found this for less than $4 at a thrift store:

aaaaand since I've never met a picnic basket I didn't like, I took it home! It came with a full set of dishes(minus one mug) that I washed and put away. I had other plans for this beauty.

It makes the perfect portable crafting station! I'm going to be relining it and adding pockets down the road so my scissors et all aren't just bouncing around in there, but for now it keeps my Beekeeper's Quilt from exploding all over the house. Plus, I can just grab it and go when I'm going to a friend's house for some quality crafting time. I think it's quite dapper. I even made a home for it in the living room:

I totally want to make more, preferably out of adorable vintage suitcases that I can line with yummy quilting fabrics!

Ha! My mom has that picnic basket!
What a fantastic way to reuse it!

I need something like that for when I go on car trips and to family get-togethers. I always end up bringing crafting stuff all crammed into a little backpack.

That's what I used to do, too! And then stuff gets tangled/bent/ripped/etc. This has been so much better since I started using it.

I love the attache case-style picnic baskets, and I'd never found one around(tho I have three other traditionally-shaped baskets in varying levels of complexity. I have a bit of a problem.) and this one popped up like kismet! Perfect for crafting.

You don't really even have to alter it, if your mom still wants to use it as a picnic basket. But wouldn't it make a perfect crafting station to keep kids occupied on family picnics?
