Handkerchief Vases here too!
«
on:
August 15, 2011 02:41:05 PM »
Here's a couple of the handkerchief vases I've made in my kiln.
Each one is made with single sheet of stained glass. For the glass that's an opalescant (pink/white/orange), I used Spray "A" on it.
Side note on Spray "A"...I just recently learned that Spray "A" is not food safe. Not that it matters with handkerchief vases but I was planning on using Spray "A" with some other projects...like spoon rests and the like. Good thing I found out about it not being food safe before I used it!!
Just thought I'd pass that bit of information along to help out other glassers if you didn't know that already!
On to the glassy goodness:
I love the way this one curled to make a peek hole!
Photo of the whole piece:
Blue and White Baroque Glass....
This photo shows where the tip of the glass turned on to itself! Way cool.
This one is a little boring in comparision with the other two...but still nice.
Thanks for checking out my posting!

All of them are beautiful, but the last one is my favorite. Just so cool to see the glass formed like fabric.

I am really interested in doing a personal swap, especially for greener things like reusable lady items, wool dryer balls, or other such things. I can knit, sew, draw, and put things together in pretty neat ways. Please PM me if you're interested.

All are gorgeous! My favorite is #1!
I'm not familiar with "Spray A"...is it an anti-devit spray or something?

Thanks for the comments everyone!
Tickle-tickle: Spray "A" is a devit spray. I had read about using it so I picked some and it works likes charm. It's really spendy though. I don't remember exactly how much but I remember being suprised by the price.
I've been doing a little research about using the homemade Borax recipe...sounds like that would work pretty well too but I want to do more research before I try it.
I'm going to chalk this up as one of those newbie mistakes: I read I "needed" Spray A, so I bought it. And now feel like I
have
to use because of the cost but if I had done more research I might have found a cheaper/safer alternative that would work better in the long run.
Oh well....such is life.....sometimes ya gotta learn things the expensive way!!

I made some devit spray at home per my teacher's recipe (borax, distilled water, Dawn dishwashing liquid) and was *very* disappointed with the results.
I'm curious what you used to drape the glass. How did you avoid having the drape mold caught in the glass?

Hmmm...too bad about the homemade devit spray! I was hoping it would work. I thought I had read that it worked for some people. Considering I have a big bottle of the Spray "A" yet it'll be awhile before I try the homemade stuff anyhow....Maybe it's not worth trying..
I used a stainless steel mold. It was covered in kiln wash but I also usually use a piece of kiln paper just to be sure it doesn't stick and to give a little cushion/space between the glass and the mold.
Here's the deal about my stainless steel mold: I didn't spend $20-$30 for a special glassing stainless steel "Floral Former" from a glassing store. I simply went to my local thrift store and bought a $3.00 stainless steel Martini shaker!
Easy-peasy! Covered it in kiln wash and away I go! Honestly I think I've used one of my thrift store molds about 30 times. Never had a problem with any of them.
The only trick is to MAKE SURE it's 100% stainless steel. Otherwise you will risk the unknown metal melting in the kiln. If it's unknown metal you also won't know what kinds of fumes/odors it could emit.
