are these buttons too small for this blouse?
«
on:
August 14, 2011 03:35:41 PM »
So I really have my heart set on pearl buttons for this blouse I'm making. I went to buy some and ended up with these because all the other ones I saw had really long shanks that I thought would hang strangely on something this sheer. The problem is now that I laid them out I don't know if they're not too small... thoughts? And if they're not too small, how should I space them? like this so there's 6 or closer together for 7?
If they are too small... suggestions for what kinds of buttons to use? I feel like I can never decide on buttons
Thanks in advance for any help!

To me, they do look a tad bit too small. What does it look like when 7 are on there? Maybe they wouldn't look as small if there were 7 instead of six.
The blouse is adorable though! What pattern did you use?

Personally I think the tiny buttons are cute, but if you're going to use buttons that small, in my opinion you should double the number, which will give an antique appearance to the blouse.

I tried a couple other arrangements after reading your comments. I do think it looks better with more (leaning towards 7 or 8 buttons now), but I'm still not sure.

Thanks! The pattern is a very heavily altered New Look 6599 view D - darts changed to princess seams, no sleeve cuffs, no yoke, buttons all the way to the top, and a collar I drafted.

As for the 2 - space - 2 - space - 2 placement... I like it, but not for
this
blouse.
If using these buttons... I think I like the look of 8 buttons best. How will you be wearing the ties at the collar?
Someday I'll be good enough at sewing clothing to modify a pattern like this
Great job!

Yea, I wasn't a fan of that arrangement either, but hey, worth a try
Glad you like it! as for the ties, I sized it so I could tie a fluffy bow. When (if) I figure out the button situation, I'll post worn pics.

I agree, I like the 8 buttons, with that many, I don't think they look too small at all. The small delicate nature really complements the delicate blouse. Which is GORGEOUS, by the way!

Definitely the 8, and going for a simple arrangement will help prevent any gaping, the 2 space 2 space etc is a nice arrangement for something different but can also result in boob seepage if ya catch my drift, far better to get good even coverage

I agree 8 evenly spaced buttons looks the best.

I have a blouse like that and the way you put the buttons in one picture, 2 together, it stops the blouse from gaping between buttons. Idk if that would be a problem if you made it to fit your measurements, but I thought I'd share that with you.

Thanks everyone! Looks like I have 8 buttonholes in my future! Anyone know a good way to measure that out? I usually wing it but I'm guessing there's a better way
Interesting thoughts on the two-space-two button arrangement too... Seems like if they were too far apart they'd gape more, but closer together they should gape less than normal buttons. I'll have to keep that in mind for other projects.

I like the two space two arrangement. but saw a neat trick, you could sew a double band in, ie another one behind the one you are placing the buttons on, then the actual buttons that close the blouse are hidden, so you can arrange them for maximum boob coverage etc..AND you can arrange the buttons on top how you want, and as many as you want, because they are purely decorative

Making sure a set of buttons closes across the largest part of your bosom helps prevent gaping.

I dont think they're too small. What about two at the top close together and then 4-5 more evenly spaced.
