I've posted three plaques on the Miscellaneous Topics thread, but wanted to post the cicada over here as it shows an example of the "blending" technique I am trying to achieve and that was discussed in the Polymer Clay Bugs Plaque thread I posted here a couple of weeks ago. I did resolve the melting brush issue by using sable. Yikes! It's expensive but it doesn't melt or react to acetone (which I am using as a thinner and brush cleaner).
The wings of the cicada are painted with three different nail enamels that I have blended with a wee bit of acetone to get a more gradual color shift. Still working on getting it all to look a bit more polished (ha,ha) but that is all about doing something a bunch of times to perfect the technique. Now that I can really paint and add layers, I think there is no end to the possibilities. Thanks for the advice and input everybody....it's greatly appreciated!

Guardie for life.

I am really interested in doing a personal swap, especially for greener things like reusable lady items, wool dryer balls, or other such things.  I can knit, sew, draw, and put things together in pretty neat ways.  Please PM me if you're interested.

Okay - so I'm going to have to go dig up your other post because I somehow missed it...but...I'm going to assume that's not a REAL cicada??  I remember when I lived in Maryland there would be times when those critters would COVER the sidewalk!  In any case I think it's wonderful - love the colors and the richness of it all.  Now I'm off to find your others!  Smiley

Hey 'Bird! No, it's not a real cicada, but it plays one on t.v. Cheesy Seriously, it's just a really good impression of one and made of brass. I used to live in MD too! I remember those cicadas. What a mess!
MW, thanks for the nice words....be careful, you might end up with something similar for Christmas! Wink

Well I think I feel a little better about that.  And I kind of love the fact that someone thought to make a brass cicada.  Smiley    Just out of curiosity, where do you find a brass cicada? HA!
Your others are all amazing - what an eye catching and interesting display they all make!

Very, very beautiful. The colors appear incandescent just as a real insects would. Great work!
