Boy Clothes Sewalong
«
on:
August 11, 2011 05:32:33 AM »
The "Clothing for Kids" board is allways packed with cute little dresses, adorable outfits and accessories for girls.
But having a two year old boy and expecting DS#2 in September I don't have the need to make dresses. I'm constantly looking for patterns, ideas and inspiration for boy clothes.
It can't be only me!
Who wants to join me in a boy clothes sewalong?

I totally agree on the lack of boy representation. I've been wanting to make some stuff for my lil guy for 2 years now (he's 2, lol). This might be the motivation I need to actually DO it!
Great idea, hope it gets rolling! I'll keep an eye on the thread.

I think the age doesn't matter. Hopefully there are more people interested in joining!
A lot of things can be made for most ages with different variations. Like hoodies, simple pants /pj pants. Even if you look at commercial patterns you often have one category for babies (size newborn - 12/18 month) and the next category for bigger kids (size 2 years to 7 years).
Spread the word about the sewalong and keep it going!!!

I found this site a few months ago. Great ideas and tutes. Think I might start with the 90-minute shirt and see what happens.
http://www.dana-made-it.com/2008/07/celebrate-boy-part-2.html
ETA:
Okay...so I just finished the 90-min shirt. Not my best work, but at least I finally made something for my little man...and I'll only get better from here! I think my pattern needs a little bit of tweaking for the wrap around shoulders...

That's really cute! That shirt is on top of my to do list!
Here is the fabric I bought:
http://www.michas-stoffecke.de/product_info.php/products_id/47735
How long did it take you to make?
There seems to be a "celebrate the boy" month every year on two blogs. Here is the second one:
http://www.made-by-rae.com/2010/03/celebrate-boy-archives/
At least there has been one this year and last year and I definitely hope they keep it up.

Here are some older post where I shared several items I made for DS#1.

Maybe they are an inspiration for someone with smaller kids. I sure hope #2 will grow into them soon.

Love the car fabric! I have this robot fabric (scraps at Walmart):
http://compare.ebay.com/like/270803871047
that I've been wanting to make a button down tee with forever...that I definitely need a pattern for, though!
Thanks for the links! I'm going to get lost in that other celebrate the boy blog today!
And I LOVE those shoes you made, silk81! The LEDs are super cool!
The 90-min shirt definitely took me longer than 90 minutes! But I had to keep stopping and starting (you know how it is, I'm sure!), so that makes it hard to determine exactly how long it took me. I struggled a bit with the pattern, too, because I don't really have a onesie the right size (or even close). I'd say it was closer to 2 hours, maybe a little more? Once I have a good pattern, I bet I could get it down to about 1.5 hours, no prob!

Oh! I'll join!
I have a 2.5 year old boy to sew for, it's just so hard to find something lovely to sew for him.
I have been sewing the board shorts from patterns by figgy's (
http://www.patternsbyfiggys.com/2010/05/beach-bum-hoodie-and-board-shorts/
) after seeing them on made by rae
http://www.made-by-rae.com/2011/06/raindrop-board-shorts/
(where they look much cooler), they are lovely! The pattern is a little tricky if you're following it entirely, but I'm mostly making it up
I will try and post some pictures of the ones I've made.. when I take some pictures..
I have two pairs currently cut out (one for the boy, one as a present) that I aim to finish in the next week. Then about 4 more planned! I really like the pattern.

I've been wanting to make some little boy clothes, but I have a little girl so all I have to work with are her clothes and I've never used a pattern I just kinda take bits and pieces of her clothes and smoosh em all together lol.
