Lifesize Amigurumi Ponyo

After I saw Ponyo for the first time I was completely smitten.  Happily have I finished her recently after a long hiatus working on other things.  Once again this is another project I didn't make a pattern for, because i must have ripped out and restitched about 5 times for each part of her if I didn't like the way a curve was going.  Most of her is pretty easy though... to get the ruffled tail I just started with a white circle, switched to red and then put about double the number of stitches in that first red row, so, the last white row, unable to support a red row of so many stitches, basically buckled.  It's a neat effect.  To get an oblong, chubby head, I started with a circle, marked with safety pins where I wanted the sides of her head and cheeks to be, and slowly increased just those areas to give them some volume.  I did the same with my amigurumi Raving Rabbid to give him little buttcheeks.  The hair is an oval of Fun Fur, sewn on with the same fun fur yarn.  Mouth embroidered with black floss.  I love her googly eyes, I think they capture the animation quite well.  
All the yarn besides the hair was Sugar-n-Cream, as I thought the slightly faded colors matched the anime the best.

You can amigurumi ANYTHING!  I'm sorry I was too frustrated to write down a pattern, much of it was so ad-hoc, but feel free to ask for tips if you wish.



Now I just have to decide which Studio Ghibli character to do next!  I have Ponyo and Chu-Totoro (in my flickr) so far.  Perhaps a cuddly dragon Haku from Spirited Away!
