I made this for the Ancient Cultures Rnd 2 Swap. My partner chose the Maya, and I decided to challenge myself. I took this image out of a mural from the San Bartolo Site. The mural is one of the most beautiful pieces of art from all of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica in my humble opinion.

It was stitched in one or two strand back stitch, mostly in black since most of the original piece was outlined in black. Part of the head dress wasn't so I stitched that in a rust color. This was my first time using watercolors on my embroidery. The camera I used is very good and picked up all of my uneven painting, so this actually looks a little nicer in person. Over all I'm happy with the it. I think using the watercolors really helped by giving it that, well, painted feel. I want to try this again and hopefully clean up some of the rougher spots.

Any advice on how to use watercolors better, or anything else is more than welcome. Thanks for looking.

Here's the original

LOL! I saw this piece and immediately knew it was Mayan. (Sometimes I revel in my Spanish teacher-ness. Wink )

I think this is a lovely piece and I'm envious of your partner. Smiley

This is beautiful! I don't have any suggestions to make it better, I love the handmade feel of the artwork!
