OMG, these are amazing! I unbelievably WANT THEM!! Seriously! I don't even know why, other than the fact that I LOVE birds, but these are just beautiful!

I need at least three! All for my mantle! XD

Would you be willing to share more of your clay-work secrets? Or a step-by-step/mini-tutorial? That would be amazing! I would love to try and make these <3

PS: I hope you don't mind, but I'm stalking you on Facebook, your website and DevArt! LOL You are my new favourite crafty-person-obsession <3 <3

Not being good with Tutorials I understand, but could I pick your brain then? And if so, here are my questions:

  • Do you start with the legs and then build a bird base out of something, or just clay {example: wire or tinfoil for the base, then clay, or just a lump of clay}?
  • What type of polymer clay do you use/do you find works well for you?
  • What tools do you use to shape/mold/form/detail your clay?
  • Do you bake the metal cogs/machinery with the clay or do you glue them on after or do you glue them on after painting?
  • Do you use a primer/base coat for the birds?
  • How thick do you find the birds get at the middle?
  • How heavy are the birds, usually?
  • Do you use painting washes for the colours to build up the metal or do you use metallic paint?

Thanks for answering! ^___^

I use just a solid lump of clay, and add the legs after. I use Premo. I bake with everything already on (cogs, gears, etc). No base coat - I don't paint them. I use mica powder, not paint. I don't know how heavy the birds are - I've never weighed them, but they are lighter than they look for sure. Smiley

WOW. I keep seeing things like this, and I can't for the life of me figure them out. Do you use metallic colored clay, or do you add stuff to the clay, or paint it afterwards?
