Hello, lovely Craftsters!  I am a little stuck for ideas and I thought I would appeal to the most creative folks I know.  Grin

I am in the process of helping a friend throw a birthday party for his wife.  The theme is 90’s alternative/grunge with a dose of Dawson’s Creek angst thrown in for good measure.  Plans so far include costumes (of course!), faux goatee/temporary tattoo party favors, music, trivia and tons of food.  Since his wife is vegan, we've planned appetizers that play off 90s band names—Green Daiya Mac n’ Cheese Bites, Stone Tempeh Pilots, Soundgarden Burger Sliders, etc.  The signs for the dishes are doodled on chipboard, drawing-on-your-notebook-in-class style.

Sadly, that's where my decorating ideas officially run out.  We don't have any band posters (which are surprising expensive on eBay).  I don't want to make things too dark and gloomy since this is her 30th Birthday.  Decorations can definitely be handmade.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance for your help!

i think i grew up in a different version of the 90's than y'all did.  my 90's were all about slap bracelets and saved by the bell the college years and jennifer anniston's haircut and 90210.  adidas jackets?

love the appetizer names though - super cool.

Tastes Like Teen Spirits - All of the drinks you would party with when you were younger.  'Cuz, I don't know about you, but I no longer drink wine coolers, cheap beer, hard lemonade or spiked slurpees!  But it would be fun for just one night.

Great idea for a party!

jo-mama: I totally hear you.  I loved the movie Clueless!!  I was amped to get some knee socks and a babydoll dress from the thrift store, yet the majority spoke and alt/grunge it is.  Cheesy

missmlissa: Beyond brilliant!!! I absolutely love it!   Grin

Keep the amazing ideas coming!

Because I am always full of contradictions- I wore knee socks and babydoll dresses AND rocked out to grunge.  Grin

I love the appetizers, and the teen spirits thing made me lol. You just have to have some flannel though. Maybe tablecoths or napkins or whatever?

Flannel and/or ripped denim streamers, table cloths, napkins. What about Pearl Jam cookies (or something with jam). Smashing Pumpkins pie. Red Hot Chili Pepper dip. Pixies stix. If you have enough color ink, you could download and print out cd covers from some of the top bands, maybe glue them to cardstock and punch holes in the top and bottom, tie them together, and hang them from the ceiling. Or just tape them to the walls in a grid pattern or collage style. You could make up a fake "yearbook" and have guests sign in.

You could get a roll of brown paper and cut out pieces to look like a garage door and put on a wall (garage bands). Maybe paint "happy birthday" on it, graffiti/Reality Bites style.

Oooh, this is really good!  I was thinking about flannel for costumes, but it didn't occur to me to use it as decor in the room.  Sweet!  I will be hightailing it to the thrift store tomorrow to get as many shirts as I can find.  Plus, it'll be fun seeing the weird looks I get with a cart full of flannel shirts in 95 degree weather.  Cheesy  Thanks Dragonflower and Feast Your Eyes!

This is great.  In a box somewhere I have all the covers/liners from CDs I've purchased (random, I know).  For some reason I just couldn't throw them away.  Looks like they're about to be cut up for a good cause!
