I got started stitching in earnest last night after I gave an emboidery lesson to my roomie's girlfriend who has been admiring my hoop wall and wanting to learn.

I showed her how to design and transfer a pattern, then backstitch, running stitch, satin stitch and french knots. We did a quick design on Sublime Stitching cocktail napkins. She has the same first and last initials as Mr. Drowning, so she did her full initials and I showed her running stitch on his first and last initials because it seemed easy to do. I think her first attempt at embroidery came out awesome! Hers is on the right, mine is on the left. Smiley

She registered on Craftster last week, so we might just see her in a future hoopla round. Wink

Nice job Songs4Drowning. Spread the knowledge of craftiness to the masses. Your friend's embroidery looks great.

Those look great Songs4Drowning!

I need a stitchy friend to come sit with me. I'm mainly a crossstitcher but I'm working my way into embroidery.

French Knots are the bane of my existence.

I am so so so so SO glad I'm not the only one still at this stage in the game!  Tomorrow is going to be dedicated to crafting.  Probably mostly embroidery because those are the hoops that need to go out first!

I used to hate French knots too! I actually don't do them the normal way, but its hard to explain my trick. Have you checked out Sublime stitching's how to? http://sublimestitching.com/frenchknot.html I think the way I finally figured it out was seeing it done in a video on you tube, then I just did it my own little way and got it to work.

I do some kind of weird thing w/ french knots and have to use both hands. Maybe I should check out the video and see if I do it correctly. Well, maybe I shouldn't...the way I taught myself seems to work. Why mess w/ it.
French knots can get a person down but stick with it True Believer!
Good Luck Partner!

after trying to learn them by using three different embroidery books, i finally went to sublime stitching and had my lightbulb moment!  wish i would've gone there first, its the best!
