Barn Owl Pyrography

I have been obsessed with owls for a while now...collecting, making, whatever.  I started playing around with a woodburning tool last year, and I'm finally getting comfortable with using the different tips.  I use a Dremel versa tip for the different shading tips, and for the straight lines I use a very old woodburning tool from the 70's...it was the first one I ever had and this is the only tip that it still has...I guess I just got used to it.  The temp differences are so weird to get used to.  Anyway, I think barn owls are the most adorable of the species, so I made this.

Stunning! I just bought a versa tip and used it for the first time tonight. I used the tip that was already on it and the results were pretty cool. I've never done any kind of woodworking before and I was pretty impressed by it. I didn't have any problems until I tried to take the tip off. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to take it off! I tried one of those non slip grip lid openers to no avail. Over top of that so I wouldn't damage it, I used needle nose pliers. Still nothing. How did you change out your tips?

Actually, I do use needle nose pliers...I just grip the tip directly and drop it into a glass jar so it cools off.  Then I use the pliers to screw a new one in.

I'm a huge fan of any bird of prey, nocturnal or not, and this is beautiful. Very nice piece of maple that you picked to do it on as well!

I've considered getting myself a wood-burning kit, but I have so many art supplies to use that I don't know if I'd get around to using it all that heavily.

Oh wow, I love it!  I have a woodburning tool, but I seriously can't figure out how to make a decent line.  People, woodburning is much more difficult than it looks!
