and I think after this I am NEVER making FSL again!!!! too much stress lol!!!

ok these are an urban threads design meant to take 72 mins per wing according to my machine, but with my machine lying, the stress of trying to get it to work, the mess ups, stabiliser holes, thread bunching etc hey took at least 90-120 mins per wing in the end. and a LOT of incredibly british swearing. thankfully the fabric stiffener seems to hide the worst of the bunching on the back of the right wing *facepalm*.

and here's what I did between machine mess-ups. good book. amaretto and coke. sewing machine to swear at. bliss.

they're currently tacked onto the back of my daughter's party dress.
(that was last week's "swear at the machine for an afternoon" project! http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=386107.0)

I think the look great.

And try to imagine them spread for flight:  they make more logical sense that way then at rest.

they look great.

quick tip though I find this the almost stress free way of doing FSL.

new needle, full bobbin ( sometimes, if you can get away with it bobbin thread is better than same color as top thread this is when bunching occurs at it's worst, when you use the same as your top thread)
a layer of organza or thing netting, tulle works well also.
2-3 layers, depending on the size and intensity of the design, wash away solvy. and I only lightly rinse it away and then shape it and let it dry stiff.

They look great on the dress though

thanks, but I used two layers heavy duty solvy, new schmetz needle, full bobbin, and a layer of netting (which you can't see as it's the same hot pink as the thread) and it still messed up!
I even used tips on how to modify the hoop for a tighter fit and... nope.

Maybe talk to Urban thread and see what they say.

yeah Sad BUT thankfully the looping is hidden by the stiffener, and the gaps where thread broke, machine messed up etc are hidden by the netting used as an extra stabiliser.

whoa! i'm impressed that these look this fab with all your problems. and i know about problems, believe me! i'm addicted to FSL so i make the UT designs constantly and always just try to step into another room while the machine is stitching Cheesy the best thing that ever happened to me FSL wise is when a friend of mine, who owns a shop where she sells embroidery machines among other things, showed me a water solvant fabric-like stabilizer. the solvy i had used before was kinda like plastic:

so it would tear easily while making FSL and would need atleast two layers of it (and it is not cheap!!). so that was the best way i've found to make FSL without so much heart ache. Smiley

I've been using a sort of woven type, like solvy but not film and it's still evil evil evil.

and those wings broke my auto cut feature!!!

i just made FSL spider webs from UT designs, i made 4 at a time - so two of them broke.. they did stitch out "normally", some of the stitches just went to the wrong places Cheesy well, this time i fixed it by stitching it up with my sewing machine. HA! I WON!

The wings are wonderful. I will be doing my first FSL very soon. I will make two chokers and masks from UT. Well I am going to try! There may be a lot of Yankee swearing here  Grin The parent site to UT is Embroidery Library (emblibrary.com) and they have the greatest tutorials. The say to use a 'sharp' needle and they use Sulky Ultra Solvy. I'm nervous about making my own bobins as I always use pre-wound. I got the needles off Ebay I think. they are made by the Organ Needle Company.
