I first learnt crochet around christmas time last year, so I have little over seven months experience.  My first efforts can be found here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=372628.msg4384470#msg4384470

Of course seven months is exactly the right about of experience to be designing and crocheting my first every baby blanket!  So when I found out that the wife of a colleague of mine was due to have their fourth (and final) child and I set to work.  Having waited long enough to find out the baby's gender I settled on the idea of a garden and hit the internet!

The design element was for the overall look of the blanket not designing the patterns.  For that I used patterns found on both Ravelry and the Lion Brand website (all free Grin).  Six weeks and 70 odd hexagons later I had this:

close up of the pond:

The fish were my own pattern!

the lilies (x2)

lily pad

And daisies on the lawn (x9):

And for luck for "Squiggle" (this was the name mum gave her bump) I found this:

this started as a three leaf clover, but I added an extra leaf for luck!

Squiggle was born on Friday and has been dubbed Naomi Melody, the blanket has gone in the post today.  I was hoping to get it to them before the birth, but Squiggle decided that she couldn't wait any longer and came two week early.  Everyone is happy and healthy!!

The best bit is the parents don't know anything about the blanket!!  Can't wait to hear what they think of it!

What a lucky baby and family, this is beautiful.  I love the hexagons and your wonderful fish and fun details.  Looks nice and soft and babies love little dimensional elements that they can play with!

This is really beautiful!  And, when Squiggle gets older, she can use it as a play mat for her toys:  She can pretend they are having a picnic and swimming in the pond!  Excellent work!

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments!  I have heard back from the parents and they both love it!!

Gumption:  you are correct, my hope in making this is that it would last for some time as a blanket.  It is quite large so hopefully they will still get use out of it as the baby gets older.  But when the baby is too big, it can be used as a play mat as well!

SciFunk - Sadly I didn't write the pattern down.  However, I have a few tips that might come in handy!  first find a picture of what you want to acheive and print it!  this was probably the most important step I took in designing the fish.  I googled Koi Carp and had a copy of my chosen picture infont of me when crocheting them.

Then I started with a chain of approx 24 and then crocheted into the side of it using a mixture of doubles, half-trebles, trebles, double trebles and slip stitch (english crochet terms) to create the shape from the tail up.  Keeping in mind that double treble was the bigggest stitch and therefore used on the widest part of the fish.   Having completed one side I tried to echo it on the other.  I also added in an extra chain at the head end to create a slight pointed "nose" on them both.  On the first fish I deliberately kept the tail on the right hand side as I wanted to create the shape of it turning slightly.

They both took alot of crocheting, ripping out, checking the picture, showing to my sister and head scratching.  If you don't have a sister you can substitute a vaguely interested friend, partner or family member!!

Oz_lzrd - half way through making this I discovered another friend was trying to get pregnant and decided another blanket maybe in order.  I too considered a pond shaped afghan.  I thought about using the same basic hexagon pattern as used in this blanket (in blue) to make a similarly shaped blanket with lots more lotus flowers, fish and lily pads!

This is adooorable~! What a creative idea, and I second nearly everyone here in saying the koi fish are great!!

Would you happen to have a pattern for the waterlilies? My brother is having a baby this August and they want to name her "Lily"... So I might have to make a lilypad blanket for them, and this flower would look so cute on top.  Cheesy

Hello. My very particular tween and I both LOVE this blanket, so much so that she's agreed to allow me to make a similar one for her. I've found a hexagon pattern on ravelry and several applique patters that I think will work. Is that how you incorporated the fish and flowers - by applique? Or were they crocheted right into the design along with the hexagons (making the entire blanket flat)? Thanks so much, in advance. -Melissa

Hello!

yes you are correct, all of the flowers, fish and lily pad were sewn on after the blanket was finished and blocked.

My name is the same on Ravelry, if you want to look at my projects to see each of the patterns I used.  This fish came from my own imagination, and sadly I didn't write the pattern down, however there is advice further up in the comments.

Hope this helps
