Been doing Zentangles for quite a few months, and now I'm exploring new ways to use them in other things.

Found some other people who are making paper lanterns/ball ornaments with their tangles, and here is my first attempt at my own.

Made some of my own changes to the instructions. Here is how I made my version:
Supplies
two colors of regular paper (for mine the black and white are Zentangles), scissors, needle, sturdy thread (quilting or embroidery), pencil, ruler, two beads (optional) tassel (optional)

Directions
Cut the paper into strips that are 3.5" long and 0.5" wide. This makes a small ornament about 3" in diameter. You can make a larger one by simply adjusting your measurements. Cut a total 18 strips, 9 of each color paper. Cut two circles by tracing around a penny.

String a tassel (if using) and bead onto a length of thread that is knotted on the end. If you are not using beads, skip this step and go to paper circle. Poke the needle through one of the circles approximately centered and push it next to the bead. Then begin to string on all the paper strips near one end, alternating colors (pattern pointing towards the bead/down).

After all 18 paper strips are added, begin threading the opposite ends onto the string. To do this, start with the strip you put on first, the one next to your paper circle. Pattern facing up. Take the loose end and push the needle through it. Continue threading on the paper strips in that order. They'll naturally begin to fan out and form a ball as you go.

Add the second paper circle and bead. Push the strips down by sliding your finger down the thread. Till you get the shape of round you want. Tie thread in a knot to hold the bead and circle against the strips. Secure well. Create a loop on the end of the thread for hanging, and knot again at the bead/paper circle to finish your loop.

Let me know if I left anything off the directions.

Thanks for looking and have fun making your own lanterns! Smiley
