Crafting to keep insanity at bay.

I took a book arts class last month and finally learned how to do the coptic stitch. Since then I kept thinking I definitely wanted to make more, and decided that the greatest way to cull my crazy stash of paper was to take my favorite items, long since hoarded and never used, and put them all into one book! I also included old notes from middle and high school, random stories and papers I've written, a bunch of printmaking scraps I did in class, etc. This is far from done but I finished the book itself and started gluing smaller scraps. There are also pockets and little envelopes made from scraps of paper so I can tuck in little notes and trinkets that are meaningful to me. Most of the pages are not the same size, I love the scrappy quality that it brings, though that being said it did make the binding a bit more of a challenge. Obviously I'll need to figure out some way to keep it shut as it's already bulging with the contents  Shocked but I'm happy with how it came out. The cover is also not finished....I haven't quite decided what I want to do with that but my idea right now is to glue tiny scraps of paper all over it....or maybe cover it with paint...not sure. I'd love to hear any ideas.

Here's some of my favorite pages, I'd love to hear what you think!

It's gorgeous, sheep! So inspiring to look at all those different papers, colours and textures. It's the kind of thing I wish I could see it in person!

Amazing and almost as much fun as a room full of kittens!  I'm on the verge of starting an altered book round robin and you've inspired some changes in my book!  Thank you so much for posting.

Your book is a marvelous collection of stuff!

You could close it with some ties or even an elastic, like some notebooks I have seen!  It is stuffed with inspiration and places for you to add some more writings and drawings!

This is so beautiful!! I'm excited to see it when you've 'finished' it (I think it's gorgeous as is!). I couldn't use any of that paper either. It's all too pretty Cheesy

I love your book! This is my favorite type of book to make. How about you make your own stencils out of acetate and paint over the cover? It'll look neat.

So amazing! I have done a few coptic stitch books, but I didn't really enjoy making them. Maybe I had the wrong paper Smiley

I love the page with the little eyeball monsters!  Grin

I started a similar project myself a couple months ago but then I had to move. I haven't gotten back to it yet but I just may now! You also inspired me to use some of the random things that I've written in my journal. Cheesy So thanks! Cheesy

Thanks so much guys! I've been kind of listless this evening and now I know just what to do - pull out my book and glue some more stuff in! Maybe do some doodles  Grin I don't think this is ever the sort of thing that is ever really "done" but I'm going to have fun!

KaoticKrafter - I can't speak for everyone, but the coptic stitch is still something I struggle with a bit, especially tightening everything down at the end when you're adding on the front cover. The paper didn't really seem to matter much as long as I was able to poke holes through every signature so I could get needle and thread through. What kind of problems were you having with it?

Oooh, so nice and chubby! And with so many treasures.  Grin I've been trying to make more like the one we collaborated on some time ago (was that this year? last year? I don't have any idea), but am so unmotivated. I used to really enjoy doing sewn bindings, but now I only like the finished product
Though there's nothing wrong with anyone's method of storage if it works for them, binding your stuff into a book is probably the craftiest way.  Smiley

This crafter is out of service most of the rest of 2015 due to a wild schedule, swapping once in a while when I can't fight the feeling anymore ("I've forgotten what I started fighting fooooor...").

Sheep- It wasn't so much that I was having a problem with it, just that the paper I was using was boring Grin I was just using plain white printer paper, but I think if I used some fun interesting papers, it might make the entire project more enjoyable. And I need to stop being lazy and make myself a drill stencil so it is a bit easier (and so I stop drilling holes in my floor and table  Embarrassed )

I found that stapling the books was WAY faster. Though the coptic stitch is WAY prettier Smiley

I am trying to help my mother-in-law go through some of her scrapbook paper she has been collecting for the past 6 or 7 years. This might be a good way to do it.

this is such a good idea. i have three boxes of mementos ive saved over the last few years with the intent of making a scrapbook, if it were just pictures that'd be fine and all but i hardly have any photos in there. i might try this idea out for some of the papers ive saved over the years. i have a lot of things that arent paper....like bits of glass and brick in a bag from when i wrecked my car, i wonder if there is a way to modify it so there is almost a storage compartment included.

Hm I'm not quite sure how I'd handle the more 3-D stuff like that....I'd probably just make a separate shrine for all the bits that couldn't go in the book.

For the more 3D type stuff, you could use some page protectors, or see if you could find a small clear box (like what some markers or other things come in), then make it the front or back cover. Or both somehow.

I am not sure if that makes sense. It does in my head.

Well I'm thinking you could glue a box down the back cover, and then all the pages in the book would have a hole where the box would poke through....but I'm not sure how flexible the book would be....probably not very.

Such a wonderful way of using the paper that is "too pretty" to use!  Just put it all together in one place where it can be admired Smiley

Love this! And so recognizable to have all these different images, pieces of paper, notes, letters and other bits and pieces that inspire you but they are now unkindly stuffed away in a box or drawer.

I started taping mine randomly into my journals and then as the mood comes I might alter them or add to them. Or I use them for cards and scrapbooking layouts. But making/binding my own book with them is definitily something I'd like to try some day. Thank you so much for sharing Cheesy
