Hi all! I've been a very busy crafter this summer! My latest completed project is this piece of stumpwork embroidery. I picked the subject matter mainly as a technique assignment for myself, this is only my second completed stumpwork piece (my other being this monstrosity.)

And some closeups.

The leaves and berries are padded with a piece of felt underneath them. The berry on the bottom I completed on another piece of fabric, made a running stitch around it, cut it out and pulled the running stitch tight to make a little ball. I then attached it to the main hoop with a couple of stab stitches to add another 3D component to the piece.

And detail of the butterfly.

To make the butterfly wings, I first drew the 4 wing components separately on fabric. I stab stitched thin wire around the wings so that they would keep shape after I cut them out. After completing the filling stitch on the wings, I blanket stitched around the wire.
The body was a fun stitch. I think, it's called a broom loop stitch, but I can double check if anyone is interested. Basically you make loops on top of the fabric secured by tiny stitches, and then when you are finished filling in the area you cut the loops off to make a fluffy pile.

I love embroidery. I took a hoopla swap break because I really wanted to get better at stumpwork so that I would have some new skills to offer swap partners. Completing this project definitely increased my confidence- maybe I'll be back in the realm of hoopla swaps soon Smiley

As always, would love to hear what you guys think!

That's incredible!  I love monarchs, and this is so cool.  It must take a lot of time and patience to do stumpwork.  I've never tried it.  I'm sure your future swap partners will be thrilled to receive something so amazing!

How many hours did it take you?

Thanks for the kind words nikschaf! I worked on this piece for about two weeks, mostly in the evening after the kiddo was in bed- I'd say probably 3 or 4 hours a night, so roughly 40-50 hours total. That includes planning, sketching, and all that technical work time too.

You should totally try stumpwork! It's really fun. My best advice is to treat yourself and get an embroidery stand if you don't already have one. It makes working so much easier and faster without having to hold your hoop too Smiley

This is crazy amazing! I love how juicy and plump your berries look and I would believe it if the butterfly flittered right off the hoop. Smiley This is definitely a lot of inspiration to try stumpwork!

You definitely deserve the love.  So much work went into this and it turned out beautifully.

Too bad husbands don't always get it.  My husband is generally underwhelmed by my work, but then again I don't ooh and ahh when he installs a new sprinkler in the yard either. Wink

really nice work!
This is one of the techniques i haven't tried but would love to!
Was there a certain book or website that you'd recommend?
I feel like this is one of the techniques that's kind of dieing out and it makes me sad, so it makes me happy to see this post and see all the people saying they'd like to give it a try

Thank you KLKing and UrsulaDiamond!

UrsulaDiamond- To learn the techniques, I used a book called Beginner's Guide to Stumpwork, by Kay Dennis. I read a lot of book reviews before settling on buying this book, this one seemed like the one that others liked best. It's pretty good, there are a lot of progress pictures. My only complaint to it is that there really weren't a lot of stitch patterns in it. The other book I use for stitches is Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches. I LOVE this book and highly recommend it. First published in the 1930's, it's now revised and has a plethora of stitches, information and easy to follow diagrams.

Good luck with your stumpwork!! Let me know if I can answer any more questions!  Cheesy

Fabulous!! Love seeing more stumpwork around here!! Smiley

The fluffy body stitch has a couple of other names too, if people want to look it up - turkey knot, or ghiordes knot. It's a fun stitch, I like making fat little bumblebees with it Smiley
