Saving my Old Sewing Chair from the Dump

My parents bought me my first sewing machine and sewing chair when I was 15 years old (uh, over 40 years ago! )...the sewing machine is gone, replaced by newer models...and I thought I was going to have to replace the sewing chair as well...poor thing...

Torn upholstery, broken top...worn wood


The lift up top was just placed on top in order for me to use it...


After seeing some of the wonderful reupholstery of our members (like bongirl5)...I decided I could try to save my chair.  I sprayed all of the wood with black paint...then I used less than 1 yard of fabric, tons of staples, some hot glue and trim, cuss words, and a bunch of screws...


The piping is made with some leftover checks and I used giant ric-rac to cover the staples:


I love my "saved" chair...and maybe it will last another 40 years!

Thanks!  It is also practical since I store a lot of tools and spare sewing machine parts in it!

I just noticed your chairs in your avatar...I have similar chairs that I want to paint black now that I have done my sewing chair!

I have got to find some cute fabric to make chair pads...they are comfy without them, but I think they would add some color with chair pads...

I love when things get saved from a life time of sadness and solitude in the trash!!
You did an awesome job, and I know you must love being able to keep such a wonderful
piece with that history in it.  I would love a chair like this for myself.

thank you!  my younger sister saw this and she said she had so many memories of me sitting on this chair, making her prom dresses and bell bottoms!

I recently saved my father's old desk top and converted it to a work space for big quilting projects...it is nice to recycle "trash" and memories!
