Whenever I begin a stitch on my sewing machine, the first cm or so has a clusterf*ck of thread gathered at the beginning, but the rest is fine. What do I need to do/adjust? Thankies!

I usually start sewing just a teensy bit after the edge and then backstitch. I have seen quilters use a scrap piece of  fabric to lead in first too. nth

If you hold onto your thread sort of tightly for the first couple of stitches it should help. or it helps me anyways

Thanks, guys. I think I might get my machine serviced just in case, I'm having trouble setting thread tension.
