I got over my fear of lye this week & finally did it! This is my first batch & to make it a bit complicated I split the batch so I could experiment with a couple scents & learned a lot more than I expected.
This is made with olive oil, coconut oil, and canola oil.

I was shocked at how quickly it showed that trace & after adding scent it was even thicker than pudding! I had to dash to line a pan so I could glop the soap into it before it became totally unmanageable.
This is scented with coconut, sea spray, and a suntan lotion scent blend. I should've covered it better as I got some of that white residue on the top...but I'm learning here....

I used pringles cans for molding these since I wasn't sure if I'd really like the craft & didn't want to invest much into the costs...and I love the size & shape of these little round cakes.
This one was colored with a powdered pigment that had some mica in it...so it shimmers! I likey!  Grin It smells very girlie...with a pink sugar & fig scent!

This bit has no color or scent ...keeping it natural for sensitive skin.

I have neighbors with goats...and am aching to try goats milk soap next...as well as making manly man soap on a rope in bay rum scent!
I could hardly sleep last night thinking about the next batch!  Cheesy

Somebody help me! Another craft & never enough time!!  Undecided

Try try again!
I found the lye at a local hardware/farm supply store... so check your hardware stores. You have to have real 'lye' not just drain de-clogger.

I got my lye from some out of the way plumbing supply that I had to drive way out of the way for, for just about 4 cups worth.  You purchased yours at a hardware store?  I've tried Lowes and Home Depot with no luck... Undecided

I just messaged you wildbird...hope it helps you out! I'm not sure if they'll ship it though as I bought it in store. Maybe someone will chime in on where is a good lye supplier that will ship UPS or FedEx.

Looks great! Welcome to the addiction!

It's pretty hard to find lye locally anymore since they discontinued Red Devil a few years ago and with the whole meth epidemic. Stupid druggies making it hard to get our craft supplies! If you check out our supplier list the very first link will let you search for a supplier in your state.

There are a lot of regulations about shipping lye so not everyone does it but here are a couple that will:

Lye is lye ... I find the flakes can be a little more tricky to measure out, but they work the same.

Thank you MareMare for improving the subject of the post (the title was a little vague) and I appreciate the encouragement & info!
I knew you would have some helpful links & because of you & fellow craftsters the bath & body section is really one of the most informative & supportive boards here.
I have been wanting to try this for so long...and now wish I had started sooner!  Cheesy
