I made a little catnip mouse out of felt and added a heart for extra cuteness.

All you do is fold the felt and cut out a taco shape.  Whip stitch the top and leave an opening in the back.  Stuff in stuffing and catnip.  I added a tail made of braided embroidery thread and sewed it closed.  Then all you have to do is cut out ear shapes and sew on and make little knots for the eyes.  Easy, quick and cute.  I have a big tub of catnip from the pet store for $3, I can make a ton of these critters for my friends with cats.

p.s. make sure you sew everything securely so the cats don't eat the parts.

Lovely idea!  I'm all over it for my two kitties and all my friends with kitties.  I'm going to have to sew it really tight!  Whenever I buy catnip mice, first the tail comes off, then the ears, then my cats open it up, and all that's left is a flat piece of the outside and stuffing!!!  They're very destructive!  Thanks for posting!   Wink

This is what I do with all the extra odd shaped fabric pieces left over once you cut out a pattern.  The cats realy like it when I have the faux fur left over but mostly it's cotton that becomes mice.  Normally I use a cotton ball for the stuffing so if they rip it open the stuffing stays together.  I dry the  fresh cat nip for about a week and just shove whatever fits into it.  My mice aren't as cute though  because half the time I skip the ears and eyes.  I'm lazy and the cats don't seem to care.

here's my version of your project (which i'd been putting off doing for a while because i'm err... lazy)

my only change was an extra long tail made from braided yarn... she loves string and likes having it dragged along the ground so she can chase it.
i filled it with cotton as per suggested (thank you NynaeveAS) and my cat alia has gone absolutely crazy over it in the 5 minutes she's had it Smiley

Just a PSA to all you cat daddies and mommies:  if your cat toy has a long piece of string like aeroplane's, please supervise play sessions and keep the toy out of reach when not in use.  Many cats die each year from swallowing string...ditto buttons/beads used for mouse eyes.

i agree on that one- my cat's toy gets put away or tied to a doorknob when out of use so she can't swallow the string.
