Hi, guys, I have been lurking over here (and looking for state's needs/deadlines as I look at my scarf instead of actually mailing it).

This is both colors held together using the basic loom knitting stitch.  At least I assume it's basic since that's been the easier one to find.  I used the red Knifty Knitter long loom.  It's slightly longer than 6", but the actual scarf ends up being a bit tighter than that as it comes off the loom.

I love how the colors are blended! I really want to try this pattern!  oh no--it means buying more yarn! Cheesy

I just mailed to Maryland--their deadline is February 13!  Plenty of time to mail a few more scarves! Cheesy

Thanks for posting--it is really lovely and special!

It takes less yarn than you would think!  Working with a new thing of Soft Navy and leftover Cherry Red, I've still got yarn left.

You Tube really helped me figure out loom knitting.  AllFreeKnitting has a tutorial for making a Special Olympics scarf, but if you just want to see how to cast on and do the stitches, it takes awhile to get started.  mikeyssmail is really great if you've just started and are starting to think that loom knitting is not going to be a faster and easier way to make things.

For casting off some tutorials may say that you can use a crochet hook or the loom knitting tool.  What they actually mean is use a crochet hook.  They may think it's a suggestion, but it's not.

I'm so glad I found this post!  I made two scarves but forgot to mail them (NC's deadline was today) but I can still make it in time for the deadlines for other states.  I'll post pictures before I send them out!

Just a heads up, the states with the biggest needs (in deadline chronological order) are Oregon, Rhode Island, Montana, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Louisiana.

kksimone - Glad you came to join us and show off your nice scarf. I have never tried loom knitting before. Sometimes I have a need to get a tadpole loom but I really shouldn't be adding more crafts to my list  Roll Eyes

moviewith0story - Welcome!  Can't wait to see your scarves!

So, I didn't have time over vacation to make another scarf. Plans were unexpectedly changed, so my free time wasn't as free as I thought. But, I did receive a sweet thank you note from a Special Olympian to thank me for donating a scarf!

Next year, I'll try to make more than one... Smiley

ETA: I just checked, and RI reached their goal! Hooray!

Hi,All... Smiley

Glad to see there is a group going for more S.O. Scarves for 2012.  My two were mailed to LA back in February.  I haven't made any more...in fact, I've not finished a scarf lately at all....hmm!  Tongue

Way back when I was in Cleveland w/DH...I found a group of ladies at a knit store...(hmmm, Imagine that)  one lady was working on a red scarf for teens graduating from foster care.
Here is the link I just looked up:
http://fc2success.org/what-we-do/programs/red-scarf-project/

I have quite a bit going on lately...but, I can work a little on one more scarf before the spring gardening bug hits...maybe....
Anyways, hope all are well and happily stitching away winter!!!  Cheesy

Is the red scarf project an ongoing project?  I did not see anything about 2012.

I sent my last batch of scarves to Maryland and received no confirmation or note...maybe they got overwhemled by last minute scarves, but it would have been nice to know they were received!

I think charities would do a lot better if they acknowledged the hard work of the volunteers...
