I have two adopted lamps that were living in my parents' attic and are now in my living room, but they are not pretty.  The bases are a combination of dark-stained wood and brass.  The shades are a whole other story, but I bought nice new ones that I plan to use.  Anyway, I want to spray paint the bases, but I have spray painted maybe 2 times in my life and I don't know what I'm doing.

Do I need to sand, prime, or otherwise prepare the bases before painting?

Do I need to use special paint to cover both wood and metal?

Do you have any recommendations of good brands of spray paint (or brands to stay away from)?

Thank you!
