Inexperience + slippery fabric = EEEK!

I'm a jersey (knit) girl and my daughter fell in love with some pink organza at the fabric store.  I picked up some tulle and some other kind of slippery material with thoughts of making her a poofy pink ballet skirt.  I have no idea how to handle this fabric and I do not have a roll hem foot.  How should  I finish the edges?  And what is a "silk stitch"?

You could always cheat and use bias binding on the edges!

Decided to melt the edges over a candle.  Looks really good, just not sure how it will hold up...

My granny always said hairspray was good for slippery fabric. I haven't tried it myself but it may be worth a go. Should just wash out leaving no residue.

spray it twice, at least.  its amazing, and you will want it for most of your projects--even your jersey.

For really difficult fabric, I sometimes use wash away stabilizer. Sandwich your fabric between the stabilizer and then sew. It's sort of papery (there's a plastic-y looking one that doesn't work as well for this) so sews easy and then you can wash it off. Best to cut way excess before you wash it, it's made of a glue or something. Washes out easy but you don't need it all over anyway. I used it when I sewed a sticky silver vinyl that was a nightmare but went through super easy and smooth when I used the stabilizer.
