Skeleton Bird Art Doll

I've been kinda bad at posting my projects over here on beloved Craftster! Well, might as well swing back into it

Here's the art doll (bird doll?) that I made for Lanikins in the Dia De Los Muertos/Mexican Folk art swap:

The body was sewn using the wren pattern from "The Artful Bird" which is an excellent book to have if you wanna make any shape of plush bird. I recommend it! Anyhoo, I used a canvas type fabric, then painted it black with craft acrylics once it was all sewn and stuffed. It made the body nice and solid and stiff to paint after sewing.


I cut the wings out AFTER painting, though, then glued them on. The paint really keeps the fabric from fraying... See his cool back skeleton?


The crest is a guinea feather dyed with alcohol inks.


The beak is sculpted from polyclay, baked, then glued on nice and snug!

Great work! And you're right, that book is handy. I saved lots of patterns from it to use in the future just in case.

I'm not a skeletal kind of person, but, I must say this bird is a little work of art!  You've given me some ideas for some peacock feathers I had to wear at my little sister's wedding.

i was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO lucky to get partnered up with noooitaremybirthday!!!  i loves this bird SO HARD...he is on display in my living room now so that all who enter may bask in his awesomeness.
