Friends of ours are getting married in august and they are having a renaissance themed wedding.  My hubby is in the wedding so he will be in boots, a puffy shirt and a vest i guess.  The couple said that the guests don't have to dress up but they'd love it if they did.  Of course, I was planning on taking our daughter to a ren fest in september anyway (first time for both of us) so this just gives me more reason to make costumes!  But I'm wondering if anyone has any links to summer dresses for women or children.  Or was everything always long sleeved and layered?  I'm thinking that I'll make our chemises out of the lightest white cotton that i can get and maybe make the sleeves elbow length instead of wrist.  But then what for the gowns?  Any suggestions for patterns or fabrics or inspiration pics are welcome. I don't want to cook in my dress but I also don't want to be totally historically inaccurate. lol.

I think you can be reasonably comfortable if you make your chemise from the lightest weight muslin or other very lightweight cotton (I suggest muslin because it is inexpensive).  Personally I think the "Irish Dress" is lovely and probably would be comfortable if made in lightweight linen. It is basically a long chemise with an overdress/bodice combo, suitable for women and girls:

I love it so much and hope to make one some day.  Smiley

If you need to re-use the outfit in cooler weather you can add petticoats and/or a heavier chemise.
