I want to make myself a tote bag using a printout of my favourite recipe.  I have seen many bags and wallets that have comic books or pictures on their sides.  How do you protect that comic or picture?

(am I asking this in the right place?)

You could use iron on vinyl (http://sewing.craftgossip.com/tutorial-sew-a-fabric-headband/2009/03/19) or sew on clear pvc/oilcloth.
For something that doesn't need to be washable, book covering (from a stationery store) would do, although the adhesive *might* gum up your sewing machine needle.

I've successfully used clear contact paper to cover the images for my duct tape items.
