I was going to suggest this too. I know that when I was a performer at the Texas Renaissance Festival, we used scotch guard on everything. and it really does work, even on velvet and lighter fabrics, and since wool is naturally (slightly) water repellent, it would do fine. it makes it MUCH easier to clean (even with red clay stains-which was our biggest challenge!) Grin hope that helps!
