First time applique -- children's t-shirts
«
on:
June 12, 2011 09:08:36 PM »
These are shirts I appliqued, as an angel in the latest onesie/toddler t-shirt swap round - my partner has her hands full right now, and has not posted pics, but I'm new to Craftster, and want to put some pictures on my favorite things in my profile, so I'm posting this picture here. (If this is the wrong place, please put it where it belongs!)
I looked at children's coloring books and online free clip art, and kind of changed some things around to create my own designs for four of the shirts. The sock monkey (his hat is my own design) was a favorite of mine and my son, and my partner really liked it too. The pirate started as just a skull and crossbones. My partner was pleased with all the shirts, and sent quite an excited PM when she received - lots of squeals and exclamation points! So, here are my first appliques - I used toddler t-shirts from Walmart; I removed the little pocket on two of the shirts and then prewashed all before applying the appliques. I also made a Ninni stuffed toy (used the current Ninni swap pattern) to match one of the shirts (he's the little striped guy on the yellow shirt). c&c welcome.

Those are adorable! I love them all, but the pirate and ninni are my faves! And I think it's awesome that you made a ninni to go with it. Great job!

Wow I love all of these!! The crab is by far my favorite. Now for my question: what is an applique? Did you like make a patch out of fabric and sew it on or is it some kind of painting technique??

I made the patch (applique) from fusing (Lite Head-n-Bond is the product I used) fabric, most 100% cotton, and some flannel (monkey) and then satin stitch or zig-zag sewing (on my machine), for each of the pieces in the applique and then all around the edge of the applique. Once I had the applique completed, I fused it again to the shirt, and then satin stitched or zig-zagged all around to hold it in place. I don't know if this is the way others do it, as I had never done applique before. I just kinda ran with it. It is probably more steps than it needed to be, but I'm kinda kooky that way.
I also have trouble writing short replies, and posts. Thank you for the compliments.

These are great! Well done
I've always wanted to try out applique (I already have all the things I need, just never got around to it!)
I love the ninny and matching t-shirt the best! I know I would love to have and wear that if I was a kid

Thank you, Oodelally. I kind of wanted to make a Ninni shirt for me, but seriously, I'm too old - I'm sure if I made me one and wore it, there would be men in white coats involved.

I have never tried to applique but this is making me what to start! I don't know why I'm so intimidated by it. The colors are great and I love the idea of using coloring books for the patterns! Maybe I can do this after all!

These are awesome! I love them all too, got to say the Ninni is my favourite though, and I don't think you can ever be too old to wear a t-shirt with applique on or a Ninni on, I would wear them, they are brilliant, though I am a kindergarten teacher so I get away with wearing crazy things, I have ones that I have painted with spot the dog and kermit and things like that that I wear, you get lots of positive comments so don't see why any adult couldn't wear a Ninni. Anyway I am yabbering, think they are awesome, you are keeping up your brilliant work I see. Hope you are all good!
