Curious Kiity fishing...

I recently completed matchbox 5 swap and this time I decided to try using resin.  I have been wanting to experiment with this for a while, but never seemed to have a good enough reason invest in the resin.



My idea was to create a Salt Water fish tank on top of a console so the "drawer" is the actual matchbox drawer (this way I stayed withing the swap rules).

I actually ended up using Quick Water which I found at Michael’s.  As I was working on such a small scale this product seemed to fit the bill and was more cost affective as well.

It allowed me to mix up a small quantity and the drying time is fairly fast (or at least I was supposed to be.)  This may have been user error, I am not really sure, however, the end result was satisfactory.

 I made the salt water fish as shrinky dinks. The mermaid on a rock came from an old gumball machine and I mean OLD!  She is probably from the early 1980’s.

The aquarium plants were a combination of plastic and real dried plants which I coated with fixative before submersion.

The final touch was to create the curious kitty.  She had to be an orange tabby as my partner in the swap has an orange tabby cat.



 The kitty was made of Sculpey and the details painted on after baking then also sprayed with fixative.

I made the kittty so he could hang almost anywhere.  My partner could take him to work or even use him as a plant pal if she wanted to. I photographed him on the side of a glass.

fantastic, the details just blew me away!
I just have one teensy problem, when you said the mermaid was OLD, lol, I never expected you to say the eighties, I remember the eighties like it was last week, lol, now I feel OLD!

UH...I'm one of the ones that lived but doesn't remember the 70's if you know what I mean LOL.  The reason I referenced their age is because during that time period I was weaving and using a lot of the buble gum plastics in my art.  My kids were small then and they remember me having BAGS of bubble gum charms.

I am only 31 and was born in January of 1980, so I totally get the whole "feeling old" when someone calls the 80's "retro" or "old" LOL.

I am amazed that there are any surviving mermaid trinkets that lasted in your craft space for thirty-one YEARS!! Any crafty trinkets like your lil' mermaid would have been used up long before that or, more likely, lost in my craft space!

Nice job on the details and LOVE that mermaid and amazing fish tank! (And kitteh is cutey too  )

Thank you for the gracious comments. I feel so isolated as an artist  at times and it is really encouraging to get feed back from other artists. You have inspired me to post another project with bubble gum pieces integrated into the overall design. Again thank you and thanks to all of you who have looked and commented!

This matchbox was definitely one of my favorites from the gallery. I loved your out of the (match) box thinking and the execution was awesome. I hope they do another matchbox swap and I hope to see you in it.
