With the possibility of a Canadian postal strike looming over our swapping heads, I'm curious how other impacted swappers and organizers are handling this.

I'm advising Canadian swappers to hold off on sending until the final word comes down about the strike.

If the strike does happen, I suppose we'll just have to wait it out?? I wouldn't want to dock swappers for sending late due to a situation that's out of their hands. I also wouldn't want to make them send via FedEx or other international services since they are sooo pricey.

My thought is that we might have to change the send-by date of our swap, since there are several Canadian swappers.

I have been very curious about this as well (thankfully I am the only Canadian in the swap I am currently in and I am the organizer so I call the shots Wink ).

From what I have heard (one of my co-workers is a mail lady on the side) it doesn't seem like there will be a postal strike *fingers crossed*. She truly believes that they will reach an agreement tonight. But if there is a strike I figure I will just mail my package in the States (but I totally understand that not everyone has that option).

And I did look into mailing my package via UPS Canada- it would be $54, whereas if I were to use USPS or UPS it would be $12 max Shocked, kind of a hefty difference.

EDIT: Well, called that one wrong.

This article explains some different aspects of the strike:  http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/cab/abn/y11/m06/i03/s02

Like this point for instance:
"The U.S. Postal Service issued a statement saying that it would continue to "accept, process and deliver mail to Canada until further notice," pointing out that Winnipeg represents just 2 percent of the country's population.

"In the unlikely event of a nationwide Canadian postal strike, the U.S. Postal Service will still be able to provide customers letter and package service via Global Express Guaranteed (GXG) service," USPS said."

It is a rotating postal strike, so it could be that certain regions may lose service for periods of time.  It is suppose to move out to the Hamilton region in Ontario tonight.  Maybe the Canada Post site will have some more information.  So it may be that Canadian Swappers (myself being in the MAF swap and angeling for two people in the US) may have to be a bit later sending.  I am in a big urban centre, so I may have options, or service for a bit longer.  But those in rural regions may suffer the most, having less access to services in general.

This sucks - but it is the first strike in 15 years :/

Here is their customer info site so people can keep track - sounds like it is a soft strike, and not a total shut down of services so far.  From the news though, sounds like postal workers are very frustrated.

i figure since my bills keep coming in (the three that aren't already e-post) i can keep sending packages out.

and if the postal workers are frustrated imagine how the the population who uses the system feels...  i read this morning layoffs have started in some areas. that isnt gonna help matters.

but the mail is still moving. it just may be slower than normal.  but with canada post... who will be able to tell?  (says the girl who had had three packages take longer than 10 weeks to get to destinations)

So there's officially a lock out, any thoughts on this?

I know my Mom sent me a package through CamPar (within Canada) and it worked great.

As of this morning no mail is moving in Canada, and yet a airline worker strike is seen as more important for the government to deal with (apparently none of them participate in craft swaps).

If it is going Canada Post, and not a private parcel company like UPS or something, it will likely not be delivered until the workers are no longer locked out - not unless it had made it through processing earlier in the week it sounds like.  So either when a contract is negotiated, or the government steps in and stops the lock out, or legislates workers back to work to stop the strike action.

From the looks of things hopefully the strike will be over at the end of the week.
They're debating on the back to work legislation

Yes, I am conflicted about back to work legislation - it does interfer with worker's right to strike - but then again, my profession is considered an essential service so we don't have the right to strike anyways, which makes me apathetic to those who can.  Also to be truthful and selfish, I want nothing to interfer with my swapping either!

The Cons stated to the news last week they would extend the session if necessary to get the BTW legislation passed.

really!?! seems unlike the cons... who generally prorogue the govt to get want they want  Wink feels a bit undemocratic.

i am of two minds about it as well. the only time i worked for a union i got royally screwed over.  dont have a lot of faith in either system anymore.

but there are a bunch of swaps i wanted to join and i have been stalking all spring waiting for them and they are all open NOW...  Sad

LOL - what can I say - no fear of a non-confidence vote, and no Olympics must be making them giddy and not think straight?  Or there are a bunch of crafty Conservatives out there wanting to swap too - hmmmm, thinking a lot of pro-Harper signs, accompanied by personalized muzzles here....

I am thinking their anti-union stance is driving them and they want to give a little to the public so they can hide a few other things - like  maybe so some people won't continue questioning all the G8 spending in Flaherty's riding.  They put new sidewalks and streetlamps in a town over an hour away from Huntsville, where it is well known NOONE walks, let alone at night -  just a town of 300 people for goodness sakes!!!!

Doesn't FedEx and Purolator still run during the postal strike?  At least that is what I've always been under the impression of, since they run independently of the CUPW?  Shipping rates with FedEx and Purolator are usually about the same (sometimes even cheaper) as Canada Post anyways, especially if you are shipping out of country.

(but from the sounds of it Harper just pushed the back to work legislation yesterday.. so postal workers may be back to work soon)

Normally it's more expensive, plus with more Canada post locations, it's less of a hassle to get to. Sure a courier will take it to your door, but if you're not there it can be a chore to get to

Depends on what you are shipping too, and sometimes they charge a brokerage fee or something like that to the receiver as well, depending on what is being shipped.

i looked into purolater, fedex and canpar to send my last hoopla round.

all were significantly more. (about 18 bucks Shocked to send from on to ab vs canada post's 3.50, more for the one going to georgia)
i got them in the mail while the rotating strikes were on.  hopefully they will be shipped soon once they are back to work. my solution is to just not sign up for any new swaps til the mail is running again. Angry

The last swap I did, I did use Canada Post only because it was the most convenient for me (I can walk to one instead of busing to one). But I had checked in with Purolator and FedEx (I'm lucky that both of them are in the same building so its easy check both).  It was  a relatively small package, and was going to Michigan (from Ontario).  Canada Post: $22  Purolator: $23.50  FedEx: $25  (these are somewhat estimates, but they are off only by cents here and there).  I've sent with FedEx before, and it has never seemed really outrageous.

If anyone is sending within Canada Canpar is actually cheaper for packages than Canada Post, but I'm not sure if they ship across the border.

Keeping in mind the Conservatives have a majority government this time (boooo), so really, while the NDP can probably play some delay tactics, I strongly suspect that it will end up going through.  I am not displeased by it, but I do think it is pretty low that in the legislation tabled, they are giving the workers less than the last tabled offer.  If you couldn't see it before, you can definitely see the Con bias against the worker in this - I can't see this making any postal worker happy.  This, and the back to work legislation passed on the CAW workers for Air Canada a week or so ago does not bode well for arbitration for workers in the future IMO, which does affect contract negotiation trends for those of us who cannot strike as well.

Well, the MPs voted in the legislation, so it has to pass through the Senate, and they will probably be back to work later this week!

Im not sure if what he did was right for the workers, but if he didnt get them back to work our economy wouldve taken a big hit, though it still took a small one. Alot of businesses were really affected and if they didn't start working again they couldve ended up having to close. I think if all of canada's economy is so strongly affected, like it is, then the government should do something about it so the economy doesnt crash.
