here's a lil gal i gussied up for my partner lanikins in the day of the dead swap! she's a master plushie maker so i knew if i was gonna do a doll for her it had to be something special. i went thrifting and was actually eyeballing an old porcelain doll in wedding gear to dress up - had about decided to go back and snag her when i saw this gal on sale for a whopping $5!!!! my grandma had a couple of these gals on her piano when i was a kid...

she was looking kinda rough and a bit dusty and the hat HAD to go but the potential was definitely there!

took her home and stripped her down.....

a little doodling....

base coat...

detail work....

add a lil lace on her bloomers and a fancy garter belt....

toss the slip, strip rotten lace off petticoat and add a new strip around bottom - re-attach petticoat with straight drop in front and remainder bustled up in back....

re-attach skirt, gathered/stitched into a bustle on back...

tack up the front of the skirt 'cause any self-respecting catrina shows a lil leg, add a ribbon in her hair and around her waist to match her garter belt, and embellish with some fancy beads and voila!!!! fancy lil dead gal ready for a new home!  Grin

so there she is! i hope you like her! i've really gotta go on the hunt for more of these lil glamour gals 'cause i've got about a million different ideas i'd like to do with them now and they tend to fall apart as they get older so you don't see them around much..... hope you like her! c&c welcome!

thanks again, guys! and thanks and you're welcome lani! and

Wow.  Is she a soft-bodied doll?

no. these dolls are generally wire armature, stuffed/poseable arms, and molded styrofoam legs/torso/head covered in something very like pantyhose on the body and silk or nylon on the head. that's why they're kinda hard to find now, cause if they haven't been in a temp-controlled environment and handled rather carefully over the years, the styro tends to crumble and the doll turns into a bag of lumps.... i know i saw some new ones (tho not quite as cute in the styling of the face) at a fair several years ago; so i guess someone is still making them somewhere, but i'd have no idea of how to get hold of them....

From the thumbnail, I thought this was a Blythe doll, but wowza.  I had one of these that was handed down to me as a kid...she was a very patriotic one, probably a July doll since my step-mom's bday was in July.

I was actually looking at these on eBay not too long ago, and pulled up my search history to find the name for everyone.  The company who made them was called Bradley, and if you search on eBay in the dolls category for Bradley, you can find a bunch at nice prices.

These dolls are called Bradley dolls.  You can find them pretty easily on ebay.  My grandma had tons of these that she never let us play with.  Wish I knew what happened to them now.

thanks again, everyone! y'all are all super sweet!

she was painted with regular old flip-top craft acrylics like you can get at walmart for $2 or $3 a bottle. takes several coats, but the colors are great and you can't beat the price!  Wink

Well I liked your doll SO MUCH that I thought I'd give it a go. I dashed to the store earlier and bought a super CHEAP plastic doll (I live in South Africa and have ZERO chance of getting a similar doll to the one you used).

I am trying to paint her face as we speak...

i don't think you're going to have much luck getting acrylic paint to stick on the plastic.... a better option would be a cloth doll or one made from unglazed porcelain or ceramic. (or even molded resin if that's all you can get) go on my profile and browse thru the topics i've posted ~ there are a couple where i talk about reclaiming / repainting old thrifted figurines and there's discussions on there about paints / brushes / preparing your surface.....

good luck and we'd love to see pics!  Smiley

Thanks erica_tattoos  Cheesy As you can see - you truly inspired me!

If anyone else would like to try their hand at painting a plastic doll this is what I did:

1. I painted the head with gesso to start off with. Let it dry.

2. I then layered on white craft paint - about 4-5 layers. Let each layer dry properly.

3. I then did the details with acrylic paints.

*For my next doll head I'm going to go with a more gradual build-up of the white paint layers, and for the face I'm going to water down the paint a tad - think it'll give me a smoother finish. I also need to buy some super thin paint brushes for finer detail work*
